@Icuw1pc @Dackzy

you guys see the announcement for the OG thinkpads?

also check out the modded X230's. They have resoldered quad cores + custom LVDS to eDP (I think converters) using the XPS13 screen with slimmed bezels. I actually found somone using this during a quick trip to China and I had to track down the people who made it. Planning to acquire one.

Are the modded X230s for sale anywhere or are they all one-offs and personal units?

The kit is available, but have fun getting one and I've heard the screen can break quite easily due to the way it is installed.

I'd rather go with Nitrocaster's 1080p kit, while it doesn't look as good, it's using the same housing and mount points.

so uhm where can I buy one, also if T430 is retro what is my T420s?

I wish they just had made a model with the old keyboard and keyboard layout.

If I can get one inside EU then I will buy one and it also needs to be a quad core.

Also I am surprised people still remember me here... This is the internet after all, so the time I have been gone is like a life time... xD

Ohh? What is this? I don't think I'm going with the x230 even if it tempts the shit out of me.

Getting the t430 maxed to the balls with t420 keyboard. No dGPU but dgpu heatsink.

I was wondering if they could fit a 14in screen in the t430. Hmmm.

I'm pretty these aren't very expensive. I think like around 1k usd give or take. (I think it's 1k barebones). The ones with less customization like the T430 with a 2k sharp screen are cheaper because there needs to be no mod for the panel. https://forum.51nb.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=1642199&extra=page%3D2 if you can read chinese the T430 upgraded screen is here.

I'm so hyped to get a pimped T430.

^ here is the ultimate thread for the X330P. (upgraded X230 to the max). even if you can't read, just look at the pictures and spec.

I'm not kidding, there is a pepe on the PCB.

The board is LVDS to eDP, it needs to be soldered to the board though.

It essentially just cannibalizes the DP from the dock connector.

I would really like a 2570p upgrade in that form however, the original TN 1366x768 is shit

LOL true. T430 it shall be. I honestly need that upgraded LVDS to eDP (it's been on my signature for a while now). Need that 1440p sharp screen on the T430 and it's a perfect CPU only laptop for my excel crunching on the go.

its one of those low voltage quads at 35w though. the motherboard circuitry can't handle the full quads. gonna mod the t430 to handle the 55w extreme edition. I'm ready.

I know, but it's still 4 cores and 8 threads, who cares!

55w extreme would be insane number crunching machine.

I looked on Geekbench for keks

I'm not joking, a 2570p with a 3740QM beats some of the benchmarked MBP 2016 6820HQ units... in both multi and singlecore.

https://browser.primatelabs.com/v4/cpu/3159978

vs non thermal throttling XPS 15

https://browser.primatelabs.com/v4/cpu/3193713

there's a lot more results.

THATS WHAT IVE BEEN SAYING.

And people are like oh the 6700HQ is fine. 7700HQ is fine. The 6820HQ doesn't even beat a fully tuned ivy bridge unlocked on average. And nothing beats out old school thinkpad durability either. I can't wait till I can just drop the thing and KNOW it works perfectly fine. I can't even do that with the ZBook (if they sell me a fully pimped T430 it will be time to start to retire my dGPU laptops, most of my crunch tasks have been given away, moved to more high level strat stuff, so CPU only is perfectly fine).

You can't even fully tune a 2570p, the only mod available is fucking with the ME FW to get at max 100Mhz extra out of it.

And that benched machine was fucking stock! It's easy to do some quick and dirty cooling mods with some copper and I've seen 85c under full load + turbo on a 3740QM with mods.

I just want a desktop class experience that's light (coming from a 2kg Alienware M11xR3) and small. I don't care about battery life being over 3h or some BS, I just want a nice machine.

Something that can go from browsing with 30 tabs in bed to rendering videos in Premiere for school, to gaming at my dad's place with an eGPU. But for modern manufacturers, I'm an edge case.

This is why the X270, the 820 G4, etc etc can't compete with the good old 2570p. Sure, it's thicker than a snicker. Sure, it's chunky. Sure, unlike an old school ThinkPad it can't handle being dropped (Elitebook =/= build quality)

On all-core performance it's coming close to a desktop i5 4670k @ 4Ghz and absolutely beating the old i7 875K (the processor in my dad's desktop) and the 2700k.

Also, watch this. You'll die laughing:

X230 with a desoldered quad core and just the normal 2k sharp screen seems right up ur alley.

X230 with a desoldered quad core and just the normal 2k sharp screen seems right up ur alley.

(jk i have no idea if they sell or make them at any consistent rate)

probably would cost me more than my 2570p and all accessories though

and I don't speak chinese so that's another barrier to entry

but seriously I spent $280 on the 2570p, $20 on RAM, $68 on SSD, $100 on eGPU dock + GPU, and I had a $600 budget so a CPU upgrade is in order. just waiting for a good deal, got all the ebay listings added into my RSS reader kek

idk
