Try connecting it to the video card if you haven't done so yet.

If it has a video card. Seems like it does by what hes saying.

The mobo video ports get blocked when you put a gpu in, so you need to plug it in the GPU.

Plug the monitor into the video card.  at my school we have computers with video cards and when i attempt to boot one on the onboard graphics the computer complains and wants me to plug it in to the video card.  wont boot with the onboard graphics.

I can almost guarantee your issue is the bios on the mother board. Its a Kaby Lake cpu with a Skylake mother board. You most likely have the old stock on that mother board. So the bios isn't upgraded for the Kaby Lake cpu's.

Couple of options for you.

1: get a skylake cpu and upgrade the board to the latest bios. Then put the kaby lake cpu back in.

2: take the build to a shop to update the motherboard bios for a small fee.

3: return the z170 board and purchase a z270 board.

I had the same issue with my z87 board. It supports Haswell cpu's but it needed a bios update to support Haswell refresh cpu's. I purchased a cheap Celeron and updated the board myself. I kept the chip and put it into another build which is now my plex server for my house.

Also, where can I take it to a shop where they can upgrade the bios?

Usually a local computer repair shop can do it. In not sure where your located. I know down here in Miami florida, we don't have many computer shops.

But another idea is if you have a friend who has a skylake cpu you could borrow it to update the bios as well.
