DIY chair mat

Was thinking of making a mat for my office chair at home...tired of all the plastic ones.  I have berber carpet...every single mat breaks within a year.  Was thinking of getting 1/2" plywood, maybe 8' x 4' worth, cutting it into 2 4' x 4' sheets, covering them with wood flooring laminate, and slapping some strong hinges between the two pieces so it could be folded up.  Think it'd work?

Absolutely, the only suggestion is  at lest 1/2" and not OSB and you wont need laminate
