$500 PC Upgrade

I am looking to upgrade my CPU, Motherboard, and to 16gb of RAM.

 

Current system-

CPU, FX 8350

Cooler, H100i

Gpu, GTX 1070

Psu, 750watt

 

With the new Ryzen 5 chips I just have no idea what the better value would be.

I am hoping to get a HTC Vive in the near future and have read that the 8350 will not cut it.

I have also noticed CPU bottle-necking ever since I got my 1070.

I'd recommend a Ryzen 5 1600, a decent B350 board, and 16GB of 3Ghz+ RAM

Also, what PSU do you have?

750W is more than enough, but if the quality is iffy, you might want to replace the PSU this upgrade.

I'd recommend something like this, although you could go for a 1700 + stock cooler if you wanted to, but you probably wouldn't really use those extra cores anyway\

Could I notice an overclocking difference between a B350 board and an x370 one?

Also I already own an H100i.

THat PSU looks good. I would recomment a Ryzen 5 1600X but it doesnt have a stock cooler. If you want to save some money but get all 6 cores, get the Ryzen 5 1600, which includes the pretty good Wraith Spire Cooler. Any one of these paired with the the B350 TOMAHAWK motherboard by MSI is a great combo.

Nothing.

Just you can do NVIDIA SLI with X370. That's it.

He already owns H100i, You can get R7 1700.

I am hoping to use it through collage. and there is a good possibility of using 3d modeling programs during that time.

As of right now is there a clear winner in the VR department or do you think the cores will help with that and also "future proofing" the system?

Go with Ryzen 7 then. It will REALLY help in 3d modelling programs. The cores and threads will help with that. Also this socket has 4 more years. LGA 1151 will be stuck in 2016.

Then go with the R7 1700 with a cooler of your choice. That's the best bet. Not any noticeable differences between X370 and B350 in overclocking as far ias i have seen.

I feel a lot more confident in Ryzen now!

There is a good chance that I will just overclock an R5 1600 and spend the saved money on cosmetics and rgb...

or I might save some more and get the 1700 we will see what happens after my next paycheck comes in...

then get a 1700, 16GB G.skill RGB RAM, and the best motherboard you can get with the remaining budget.
