Server psu for desktop pc?

Go to solution Solved by Elerek,

You might want to look at this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/SuperMicro-Ablecom-SP552-2C-550-Watt-ATX-Server-Power-Supply-EPS12V-PSU-PWS-0047-/301244508315?hash=item462392689b:g:38QAAOSw0vBUc3tj

If that's enough wattage it's about the same price as the one you linked, but has atx cables on it.

Hey,

I need a more powerful psu for my pc and was wondering if it is possible to hack a server grade psu for normal pc use?

Specifically I am thinking about something like this 700W unit: http://www.ebay.de/itm/Dell-0G193F-700Watt-Server-Power-Supply-Unit-PSU-Netzteil-7001423-J000-Z700P-00-/272644666429?hash=item3f7ae3743d:g:OR8AAOSwtZJY~yvV

Is it possible? where are the cables or where can I get them? (lol)

What eles do I have to think of?

I wouldn't care about it being loud or anything really :P

Thanks in advance!

Actually I am mostly concerned with the cabling ... I would find a way to mod the psu into my case trust me :P

Can't seem to find them at the moment from my work computer, but I know I've seen some adapters that slot onto hotswapable psu's and have atx cables.

Build: Intel S2600gz, 2x E5-2670, EVGA SC 1070, Zotac 1060 6GB mini, 48GB Micron 1333mhz ECC DDR3, 2x Intel DPS-750XB 750 watt PSU

It's not a adapter. Each redundant psu has it's own proprietary housing, where the standard psu wires come out of, you cannot just grab any psu module and plug it in.

No more like $400 so you can use that 12 dollar psu module and you will need at least 2 of those.

No, the thing I'm talking about is an adapter.

There's a company that takes the proprietary sockets that the psu's plug into, puts it on a custom board, and brings atx power cables off of it.

They don't do every server psu obviously, but they make them for some hp and dell units.

I'll see if I can find them this evening after work.

All redundant psu needs a chassis with where the ATX cables come out of it. So which "special" kind of adapter are you talking about?

Not all server boards need that though. For instance, my build I use for a desktop has a motherboard that the server psu's slot directly into. There are no cables.

Also, many server chassis directly hold the psu, there is no separate psu chassis with cabling.

Finding one that does work like that may be useful for the op, but is not what I was referencing.

I'm referencing something similar to that, but just a small custom pcb, not a chassis of any kind.

edit: Here's how my psu's look:

This is ALMOST what I was looking for... These only provide 12v though.

The redundant psu chassis is probably already installed on to that server case with the wires already plugged in. This is for the ability to hot swap, not because there are no cables.

I will look for something along those lines. Shipping to Germany is too expensive unfortunately but I agree it would be easiest to get one like that. Dunno maybe I'm even gonna solder a bit. Feeling adventurous :P

So you got a Intel HPC server board. Nice!
