I can answer it all now. No, it won't be cheaper. They could do TQ to explain why. But I'll keep it shorther than full video. Laptops use custom parts which you can buy, but you'd need actual engineering knowledge to get everything working. It wouldn't perform anywhere near consumer stuff, would be expensive to get parts that would perform. Would be heavy and huge compared (you can DYI quite nice comparisons with things like Brix and USB screens).

I don't mean a fully custom system. I just mean like how you'd buy a new part to replace a broken component like speakers.

Like I said, custom parts. Just changing cooler from business grade laptop requires just right part and really careful process. I wouldn't even try anything which you can't clip to place.

All laptops are different.  The only thing you could really "custom build", which would be more like "manual OEM build" in reality, would be to assemble all the available parts for an existing laptop, which would result in the same thing you could have gotten just buying that model new from a store.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

It would be pretty cool to see LMG build a laptop from scratch. would It be cheaper to buy a brand new dell or buy parts on ebay and put it together yourself? should be a fun video.

Have you seem Linus' construction ability, let alone soldering skills?

Scrap the laptop build from scratch idea, he should build a ultra mini itx mini mini pc. Custom cooling fans, custom case.

But again, Linus' building skills is very weak.
