CPU and Motherboard compatability ?

Greetings to you all, you bunch of intellectually superior human beings. I have an Asrock B75 Pro3-M motherboard running an Intel i7 2600, coupled with a HD 5450 1GB graphics card. 16GB Ram...blah blah blah.

I'm looking to upgrade my chip since I'm having some issues with it running quite hot when I'm using iSpy webcam monitoring. I'm looking at an Intel i7 3770. My questions are these:

(1) Is my motherboard compatible with the Intel i7 3770 ( I know they are both 1155 socket, but one is south bridge and one is Ivy bridge) ?

(2) Since the onboard graphics on the i7 3770 are HD 4000, could i get away with just running from the chip and dump my HD 5450 1GB (which isn't a good graphics card in the first place) , will this help with my transcoding & heat problem with iSpy . ?

Build it on PCPartPicker and it will tell you any compatibility issues. Though most likely, you just need to update your BIOS.

The i7-3770 will work with your B75 motherboard.

 

According to the BIOS firmware log on AsRock's website, Ivy Bridge CPUs should be supported even on the oldest BIOS version.

 

It makes sense since Ivy Bridge released along with the 7-series chipset motherboards (e.g. B75, Q75, Z75, Q77, H77, Z77, etc). Sandy Bridge arrived with the 6-series motherboards (e.g. H61, H67, Q67, P67, etc).

 

The Integrated Intel HD 4000, in general, is a bit better than the Radeon HD 5450.

That said, I don't think removing the GPU will really help with your overheating issue.

 

Is your CPU just running really hot? What temperature(s) are you observing?

You may most likely just need to:

• Clean the CPU heatsink from dust
• Clean off, and re-apply a new coat of thermal paste (thermal paste tends to dry out after a few years)
• Increase the airflow of your computer chassis (add an extra fan or two)

Yeah, it could do with a good clean.

Thermal paste will be that Grizly Kryonaut stuff on the 3770.  I thought about the airflow too, thats why i was thinking of dumping the 5450. Dumping it would not only free up some space for airflow but also reduce card heat into the case and also reduce power comsumption.

plus the intel Quick sync would be more efficiant on the 3770.

Ive included a pic of the CPU Hardware moniter info, its in two parts. The system throttles horribly, some times only giving 48% utilization @ 1Ghz or even less sometimes.

Your CPU is definitely overheating, and thermal throttling.

Remove the heatsink, clean off ALL the old thermal paste, apply a new amount, and remount CPU heatsink.

CPU fan speed is showing ~2200 RPM, so it's working okay.

 

Everything else (HDD, GPU, etc) seems to be okay temperature wise.
