I'm looking to upgrade my modem and router based on my current internet speeds, I don't know how to test this connection other than on speedtest.net, however I'm currently a Verizon customer using their current average consumer router. (Note: I am not paying for a gigabit network either)

your "modem" is the Verizon provided Optical Network Terminal (ONT) this cannot be changed, as it is where the fibre is connected to your home, but you can plug in any router to that, and it should have no issues

your router should be gigabit capable (as are most if not all routers on the market today) as the ONT definitely is.

What is your price range for the new router? are most devices wired or wireless?

Most devices are wireless, and so if I were to buy a new router would I use the Verizon ont as a modem alone And disconnect all devices from it? 100-150 price range, and also not sure if it would be more beneficial to upgrade my package to the 300/300 if possible

the only things that would be needed to stay in are any voice lines, and the new (or existing) router

the only benefit I might see would be going from a lower cap to a higher one (I'm not on Verizon, so I don't know if they have bandwidth caps) 100/100 is still way more than needed for anything (unless you do a lot of uploading or repository syncing) even Netflix/YT 4K is still under 10Mbps

So would even a new router kind of be a pointless with my current internet or do u think there would be an upgrade?

are you having issues with WIFI throughout the home? or any other speed issues?

it also depends on what WIFI versions the FIOS provided router supports, but bottom line is if you are happy with the current setup, then changing seems not necessary

I mean the only real problem I have is connection due to range. The room I use my Wi-Fi the most in is a floor above and doesn't have the same speed as when in the same room as the router

There are lots of choices for an upgrade to a new router, but I've been out of the loop for a while on which ones are the best for range and speeds

although something with MIMO and 802.11ac should be fine

Alright,  thanks for all the help!

Would like to mention you need to check if your current setup is Ethernet or Coax. Verizon does use Coax from ONT to Router in some cases, for TV I think. If your on the Ethernet to the router setup then any router will work, but if your on the Coax setup Im not sure what options you will have open to you.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
