Help me installing Linux Mint please

Hello

I want to install Linux Mint and I just downloaded the ISO. But now I want to verify the ISO. Do I have to verify it on the winodws PC I used to download it or do I have to install it first on the new PC? And when I try to download the files I need to verify it, I get an error message. Please help me.

Can you please translate this for non linux users? Where do I have to find checksum. What even is checksum. The only thing I have done until now is downloading the iso.

install 7zip on windows.

 

right clivk on the iso and go under checksum, then sha256, and make sure it matches the one on the website.

I have opened the ISO with 7Zip but there is no checksum in it.

dont open it, right click and there is a 7zip option and in that a checksum option with sha 256

Do you mean right click, CRC SHA, SHA-256?

oh yeah. Now there is a long combination of numbers and letters and I can compare them to the ones linked in the txt file on the Linux Mint homepate. Am I right?

Thanks for your help! But is only the integrity of the ISO checked or the authenticity as well. Because there is a link to a sha256sum.txt.gpg file as well.

if the checksum of the file is the same the iso isgood, dont worry about gpg

What is the gpg file? I just want to understand this verification process.

If you download ISOs via torrent, they are verified automatically.

I just clicked on one of the links of the different universities. Are they torrents?

No. The torrent download link is just labelled "Torrent" and it's above the mirror downloads. You need something like qBittorrent to use it.

I was able to just download the ISO via the torrent link with my raspberry pi. But I did all the verification steps with it and in the last step it should say, that the signature is good but in my case it says that it is unkown wether the signature is good or not. Same for the ISO I downloaded from one of the universitiers.

You do not need to manually verify the ISO if you get it from the torrent. Verification is automatic.

FWIW, I've never manually verified an ISO and never had a problem caused by that.

Oke. I was wrong anyways. In the line above it basically says that everything is fine.
