Supply shortage of flash memory. SSDs are pricey right now as well.

Price may go down once the supply and demand level out (platform transition to DDR4 is part of the reason, increase of M.2 drive adoption as well) or the manufacturers may realise people are still buying it at this price so keep prices high.

Flash chips are in a shortage right now. They switched to 14nm from 20nm, which means that initaily the cost will be higher, and the yield is less.

Supply of the chips is limited.

Im chapping at the bit to upgrade to a 16GB 3200 speed or Corsair Vengance in white, but that is £135 at the moment. I paid £98 for my 2666 speed set  i have at the moment, and paid £45 for the 8GB I've got in my HTPC, but it only needs 2400 speed so don't really care about it as much.

However, I'm awaiting to see how the lay of the land is next year as I'm planning a upgrade to X299 if Intel can clean up the total mess its launch was, or ill go to Z270 as I might be able to take components like DDR4 over. Or on the cheap, upgrade to a 6700K, RAM and PSU on my present system as I'm pretty happy with it.
