Power Mac G4 Micro ATX Project

PeaceWalker93

Had a bit of time today to keep messing with the G4. I have almost finished the bracket to hold the front radiator, it still needs some more reinforcement but the side mount is finished and the holes are already made and marked on the case. I also removed the DVD drive door and the metal panel around it so I can paint it.

Today I made the reinforcements for the front mount, I still need to trim the edges, clean everything and paint it but the rigidity of the frame has improved a lot.

Looks awesome so far, the silver paint really makes those internal parts look clean.

Shame about those battered side panels, they look like they'll be a pain to restore. What are you planning to do with them?

Thanks! I'll try to sand around the spot were the paint is missing and use the same silver paint to patch up the spot, depending on how it looks I might just leave it like that, or just buy another cheap G4 out of ebay and replace the panel. I hope I don't have to do that since I already have too many G4's laying around.

The front mount is finished at last. Now it only needs to be sanded down and painted. Also all the new rivet holes for both the radiator mount and the hdd cage have been made and test fitted as well as some holes on both the side panel and front panel to allow a screwdriver to fit so you can easily remove the radiator and the HD (Also moar holes for airflow on the front). If I have some time I'll try to start sanding the case for paint.

The front mount is officially finished. This morning I sanded the whole thing down and painted it silver (I also painted the DVD drive front bracket). The only thing left now is to start preaparing the case itself por paint. I'm going to be a bit busy this week but I will try to keep working on the G4.

After a couple of rainy days, today I finally finished with the inside of the case. Everything has been painted now, I just have to wait a couple of days for the paint to really settle so I can clean everything and apply the clear coat. (This paint leaves some small aluminum shards that I always clean, and to do that it needs to be really dry)

Last night I did some work off camera. The paint was already dry, so I have installed the PSU/DVD bracket inside and also started moding some of the rear plastic panels (the laserhive kit came with a new panel for the rear but I have decided to use the stock ones for a more OEM look).

Might I suggest making dedicated posts so other people's posts don't interfere?

Such as

"Post reserved"

"Post reserved"

"Post reserved"

etc...

and then when you update the series/log, you just go back and edit one of the "Post reserved" posts.

I don't know how to do that, I'm pretty much a noob using the forum

See how all I did was post " Post reserved " right next to each other like that?

It removes the clusters of people commenting in between so using that method, you could be able to make it looks like a single piece and then have peoples comments come after wards

Finally the metal part of the case has been finished, everything has been clear coated and installed inside. I also finished moding the rear plastic pieces so they fit the I/O and the PSU. Now the only thing left is to make the rest of the plastic panels look good.

Today I cleaned all of the plastic pieces and started fiting some stuff inside the case. I still have to get some paint to touch up the panels but there isn't much else to do.

Today I finished with the side panels, a couple of days ago I painted the left side's interior and today I made the door side (no pictures of that, the paint is still drying now) I'm not a huge fan of how it turned out, so in the end I might just have to get a replacement panel for the door side ( the left side only has a little ding) or another whole G4.

I've always loved these old Apple system mods. To me, computer modding has turned into sort of what you see in the car modding scene: a bunch of kiddies mindlessly strapping off the shelf components together. Modding should involve self fabrication and expertise to make things that weren't designed to fit together, fit together. This build certainty has evidence to show those attributes as well as the hours and effort it took to put everything together, I like that.
