So I know VGA is old and kinda outdated. HDMI is mostly for TVs and I believe it has an fps cap, but what is better, DVI or Displayport? I'm gonna be using them with a very high end monitor and a GTX1080. Do they have fps caps? Do they hurt image quality? what is better for high-quality gaming?

DP -> HDMI -> DVI -> VGA

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

VGA is analog. complete shit, distortion with low-end cables, bad resolution. only useful for old projectors in conference rooms.

DVI is both analog and digital. DVI-A is analog. Don't use it (never really caught on anyway) DVI-D is digital. it's fine unless you need more rez or Hz than it can deliver. DVI-I is both. make sure it's digital, and then you can use no problem.

HDMI is newer, delivers audio as well as video, supports high resolution, high refresh rate, HDR, etc. modern display connector.

DisplayPort is also newer, and is HDMI's competitor. it supports audio, high resolution, high refresh rate, and HDR just like HDMI, but it also supports adaptive refresh rate. Generally considered the best connector.

So can DisplayPort support 144hz at 4K with Gsync?

no

Kinda, with DP 1.4 and DSC

4K at 60Hz is the max.

First, what is display stream compression and does it make quality worse in any way? Could I have a link or be told what to search to find this page? I am thinking something in the ASUS ROG category, most likely ROG Swift PG27UQ or something from this page. Thanks!

DVI is sometimes a better choice than HDMI with older high refresh rate monitors. Not saying you're wrong, just adding some information

I use DVI just because my secondary monitor has this 'feature' where it'll disconnect the display from the OS when I turn the monitor off via HDMI.

also hdmi has shittier colours on the monitor.
