Gtx 480 for physx

Go to solution Solved by Lurick,

Dedicated and paired with with other card?

I think 99% of the time dedicated PhysX cards are just a waste of time and money relative to the performance given.

Hey guys

So my htpc/lan rig consists of 2 watercooled gtx 480s, asus striker 2 and an x5460.

Now the striker just died (sad times) and lga 775 motherboards with sli support are rediculously priced so i was thinking was trying SLIHACK on a crossfire only board but if it doesnt work i was going to just use the 2nd 480 as a dedicated physx card because tbh its more for looks than peformance but i dont want to slow the system down.

So in short if SLIHACK didnt work would a dedicated Physx GTX 480 hurt peformance

You should still be able to use SLI as long as you can provide x8 connections to the GPU's.

It wouldn't hurt performance, but you'd find that it rarely helps and it'd just have it idling and sucking power.  When it does help however you would see at the very least smoother frame rates.  Running the Nvidia PhysX test I had the minimum FPS become the average on my GTX 970 when I set my GTX 650ti OC 2GB to be dedicated to PhysX-and that was on a PCIe Gen 2.0 x2 slot. That was the perfect situation though and you'd rarely see that in actual games.
