Since I reinstalled windows on my laptop using a HDD I had lying around (not the one that came with the laptop), I found that it was running kinda sluggish and sometimes it even froze for a minute or two. I wanted to monitor temps and other stuff but every time I launch a software like HWInfo, HWMonitor, AIDA64 or even CrystalDiskInfo it just crashes or doesn't open. The only common thing I found is that they all crash when checking the internal drives or SATA (I confirmed this seeing that AIDA64 gets stuck at loading SMART drives and CrystalDisk won't even open).

As I can't check SMART status for my HDD, is it safe to assume that it's dying? and if it is so, what could be a good M.2 SSD with 250GB at less that 100€ (I'll be swapping it with a 240GB SSD I have in the desktop)?

Sounds like failure symptoms.

Have you tried doing a dick cleanup?....right ckicl your C drive then hit properties then hit Disk Cleanup then click on Clean up system files then click ok then ok again then do a restart.

How did you format the drive before installing windows?

But yes all signs point to the drive not being in the best health... wouldn't do anything important with it.

Formatted with the windows 10 installer (live USB). I think I'll just clone it to the SSD I have in the desktop and buy an M.2 as replacement, damn failing drives

sounds like a plan, generally drives that one has "lying around" is not the most fail-safe scenario :D

Yeah I have a couple drives literally lying around on my desk. I use to take them out of unused or dead pcs I have at home (like an Asus ultrabook with faulty mobo) and keep them just in case I need a drive. The original drive for this laptop is currently being used as external backup for my data (it's a 1 TB HDD).

What could be better: Crucial MX300 M.2 or Samsung 850 M.2? (both are under 100€)

Okay okay, don't derail the topic because of one little typo/joke.

Did you try reinstalling the SATA driver?

Have/Can you run CCleaner to properly clean the registry and junk off your HDD?

Did you check to see if any SATA cables have been tugged on.

No SATA drivers on Lenovo support site. not bad.

My windows installation is quite fresh (like a week old), so there was no relevant junk

the SATA cable looks fine

Also, I just updated the  BIOS (like 30 seconds ago) and found out that Win10 isn't installed in UEFI mode, as it won't boot without legacy support activated in bios. Could this be relevant? (I doubt it, but whatever)

personally ive had 5 samsung 8xx drives and the previous version too, and none of them failed so far in casual workloads like gaming, light programming and so on. (didnt hammer them as cache or something like that)

So I would recommand the Samsung.

Yes it is relevant. If you have win10 installed in UEFI mode and have UEFI mode enabled in the BIOS and not UEFI & legacy for both the OS and the BIOS it will cause issues.

Also, make sure you have defrag disabled for the SSD and that the SSD(the C drive) is the first boot option.

Legacy support was already on before (or it wouldn't boot) and I know my way around pc hardware :D my desktop is fitted with a couple of SSDs already
