[USD] $600 Ryzen 5 Build

Looking to put together a Ryzen 5 build for a friend and wanted some feedback on the parts I've chosen. Budget for the build is $600 USD.

Some info:

She's not the biggest gamer in the world and so I wanted to focus on a better CPU for her everyday computing tasks (word processing, internet browsing, regular student stuff). She has told me that she wouldn't mind playing a few PC games and I plan to help her explore PC gaming to see what suits her.

What kind of games does she want to run? the CPU may be a little OP for internet browsing and word processing.

Pretty good but you should maybe suggest to her to get an SSD, it'll make everything much, MUCH Snappier all around. It's only ~$60 CAD on a budget.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

As far as games go, she's not quite sure. She did mention Tabletop Simulator but that was only because we're planning on getting a group together for Secret Hitler.

CPU wise, would it be better if we went for the R5 1400 to save some money?

Silly me, how could I forget an SSD. Thank you for the reminder.

i mean the 1600 is "futureproof" aka you can slap a 1080 in it later and see no bottleneck

other than that , its a very nice build , going down to the 1400 wont save you that much , rather stick to 50$ more for 2c/4t more

Sounds good! In the event she gets into PC gaming, it'll be good to know that the CPU will be alright if she were to upgrade to a better GPU.

I'd love to wait and see what Ryzen 3 is all about but she's kind of in a hurry to get a PC built. Her old OEM Desktop finally gave out.

I'll take a look into the 470 you have there. Didn't know much about it when posting.

470s are sold out and inflated thanks to Crypto currency (aka Bitcoin and Etherium)

That's unfortunate. Either way, the 470 that was linked threw the budget over by $91 USD. Looks like we'll be sticking with the 1050 for now.

Thank you so much for the info!

Then at least a 1400 + 1050Ti

You don't need a 6-core unless you have a high-end GPU, want to do pro work / stream, or both.

Hell, a G4560 build would make more sense here IMO.

Slightly more expensive, but tons of extra GPU performance:

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1400 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($158.69 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: ASRock - AB350M Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($65.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: Kingston - 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory  ($54.75 @ Amazon)
Storage: PNY - CS1311 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($52.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Western Digital - Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($48.44 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: Asus - Radeon RX 470 4GB STRIX Video Card  ($168.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Case: Xion - XON-310_BK MicroATX Mid Tower Case  ($22.99 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: SeaSonic - 520W 80+ Bronze Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($54.90 @ Newegg)
Total: $627.73

Less expensive, but weaker CPU:

CPU: Intel - Pentium G4560 3.5GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($66.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: MSI - B250M PRO-VD Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($61.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: Kingston - 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory  ($54.75 @ Amazon)
Storage: PNY - CS1311 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($52.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Western Digital - Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($48.44 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: Asus - Radeon RX 470 4GB STRIX Video Card  ($168.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Case: Xion - XON-310_BK MicroATX Mid Tower Case  ($22.99 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: SeaSonic - 520W 80+ Bronze Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($54.90 @ Newegg)

$170 looks like a pretty normal price for a 470.

Yeah, before bitcoin mining you could get them for $130 with a rebate, but it's still not that bad, especially for a STRIX model

oh.. ok then.

So a 1400 + GTX 1050Ti is the solution.

Ouch.

Didn't realize it was that bad.

That seems strange though. Games can use more than 4 threads, and Ryzen is almost as good in IPC, and matches the G4560 in clockspeed.

I'd venture to say that these are day-one benchmarks. even so, it's crazy how the 1400 loses to the G4560 in gaming.

But the 1400 is still a more futureproof CPU.

Makes me wonder: How will Ryzen 3 not get crushed by the G4560. Single CCX?

Thank you both for the help. I've ended up with two identical systems aside from the CPU. I'll give her the choice of a 1600 or a 1400. Ideally, I'd like to go for the 1600 as its a bit more "futureproof" even though tech moves quickly. I'm also going to throw in the SSD out of pocket so she'll have a better experience with the OS. I'll of course consider anymore advice if need be.

That build will be great.

However, just so you know, although the UV400 is, inherently, faster than hard drives, since it's an SSD, it's one of the worst SSDs available. Worst tier on the SSD tier list in my sig.

Still put it in. it shouldn't be bad, and will be better than a HDD

It'll be coming out of my pocket so I don't mind ponying up more for a better SSD. I'll take a peek at that SSD Tier List first thing in the morning. Thank you again!
