It's usually a waste of a drive that could have been doing something else.

RAID 1 is an array in which two drives act as one.  When one receives data, so does the other.  This acts as a continuous backup in case of hardware failure.  I would still be booting from my OS SSD, but I would also have a cheap HDD with enough storage to have an exact copy of the other.  This does not decrease the performance of a Boot Drive.

I know, I'm saying that it's usually a waste of a drive used on the OS.
