Hi everyone.

I'm not too sure how to get this started since I'm still in design phase, but I'm looking at creating a video game. I have everything from 2D scroller to VR game designs and outlines. I'm looking to move into actual production, bits on disk instead of pen on paper.

Any ways. I've got coding experience in Java, C++, VB, and some Haskell. So I'm not completely n00b here.

My friends and I are looking at possibly using Unity, since it's free if you are a business making less than 100k. We're getting into this venture, so free is cool.

I've looked at other things like the various RPG Makers and such, but everything really looks the same coming out of that, and I'm not really into making a game look like the original Pokemon on GameBoy Color.... Yes, I'm old..ish.

GameMaker looks ok, but I like Unity's customization concepts, such as layers, integration of 3D with a 2D style game. Unity looks like it'll easily support VR, and also looks like it'll support development for Android and iOS. We're looking to build for PC, and hoping to get greenlighted on Steam.

I haven't used Unity yet. I downloaded it this morning, and plan on going through the tutorials over the next couple weeks.

We haven't solidified Unity yet.. so, would there be another engine that would be recommended instead of Unity? And if so, why? What functionalities are better or more useful, or non existent in Unity or other engines.

Thanks in advance.

Try unreal engine. It's quite good with the effects compartment, that is if you want to have visually satisfied game. Haven't used it personally, but I've heard from some of my good coding friends that it's quite good.

Haven't heard a lot about Cry engine, but it's worth a try.

If you need help on used parts, contact me. I'm an used enthusiast.

I'll look into Cry engine. Is it based on WannaCry? Jk.

I thought Unreal is very limited if you do free, otherwise, everything in engine is paid isn't it?

Nope. You can build assets in Blender (free), or buy them from the store, but you don't need to. You just sign up for a free account, and you get access to the Unreal Engine, beta games, Unreal Tournament, etc. All free. You only have to pay for Unreal Engine once you make over $10K USD a year off of whatever you make. Basically they're letting young game designers get into the market without having to use crappy software or needing a bunch of capitol.

EDIT: and I think there are free asset packs and textures? But I haven't advanced enough to need those. They do give you all the character animations, texture packs, etc for the tutorials for free. And the tutorials themselves are free, on YouTube.

I'd go with UE4 if you want to leverage your C++ experience, Unity is C# with native C++ support in the paid version (any C# is compiled to C++ on package, though). It's also free to develop on, the catch being that they want 5% of sales once you launch.

That said... for 2D, Unity kind of has the edge, but UE supports 2D and is actively developing its 2D tools from what I can tell.

Greenlight isnt avaliable on steam anymore. You have to pay $100 to release a game.

You said you can program, but you never said whether your friends can. And if they can't code, and they don't have any other development skills, then rethink the project.

Yes, we've all got coding skills and one with Graphical design skills. I haven't done 3D modeling, but one of the guys does.

I haven't used Blender before. The closest to 3D modeling I've done is attempting to use Gimp, which wasn't too user friendly for us n00b to graphical design. I'll download Blender and see how that goes. Thank you for mentioning it!

I saw that. Which is good in a way. The majority of the games were all garbage. I will not put my name on something that is crappy. Atleast I won't have to worry about my game being buried by Minecraft ripoffs, and billions of the same game made in RPG Maker....

I thought the 5% on Unity is only if you make more than $10,000 on a game, then its 5% per quarter revenue. I'll have to double check. I don't plan on getting filthy rich. Not doing it for the money.

It did seem that Unity has the edge I'm looking for in regards to 2D. It seems to provide much better support for 2D with 3D elements combined within.

Have any of you designed any games? And if so, any quick pointers or tips on what to do or what not to do? Definitely trying to add uniqueness to the game. I don't want something that is going to look like everything else.

Blender is simpler than GIMP, but it's still complicated. Best thing is to start with the stock assets Unreal Engine gives you, and work from there.

I do have Autodesk education, and someone in our team is pretty good with that software. Didn't even think of that. We all have different talents, and are trying to round out and expand skill sets.

Sorry if that wasn't clear, the 5% after $3,000 (per quarter) is actually for UE and not Unity. Unity's business model can be found here (TL:DR - You pay once you make more than $100,000 a year).

As for designing/making games, while I have not fully released any games yet I am currently working as a Pro in the industry. I wouldn't be overly concerned about uniqueness, but do try to tweak one or two things if possible and focus more on art to achieve that. There are plenty of games that aren't all that unique but gain traction based on pure execution of concepts.
