Hello, I really like the idea of the Surface Book. A powerful laptop and tablet in one device intrigues me.  I am looking for a laptop for college and I thought the Surface Book was a no-brainer, but the price tag, and the lack of USB-C is frightening me.  I need something with a gpu, around the same or better than the gtx 965m 2gb, preferably better than the 965m.  I also need usb-c/Thunderbolt 3, and it needs to be a 2-in-1 with very good build quality.  As of yet, think that the Surface Book with Performance Base is my only option for a powerful 2-in-1 for college.  I'm looking for something better, does anyone know of a 2-in-1 that sounds anything like what I'm looking for?

Is there a need for USB Type C or Thunderbolt? Let's not talk about you in 4 years, because you in 4 years may not really be you in 4 years. Let's talk about what you need now. And even if you don't have a USB Type C port, you can convert Type A to Type C just fine. I have no Type C ports but I'm doing fine with my Type C phone.

Also is there a reason why you want a 2-in-1? Do you see yourself using that tablet feature often enough? Most 2-in-1's are small because well, using a 13" or 15" tablet seems silly (even 12" seems silly), and small sizes lend itself to not being able to hold GPUs.

2-in-1 is somewhat important to me, I can see it being used as media consumption as well as a note taking device.  I have a surface pro, I use it to take notes in classes with OneNote, and it allows me to keep my notes on me without carrying a lot of notebooks.  The GPU is the less important part.  I want Thunderbolt 3 for use with a razer core.  I do feel that I will need some sort of dedicated graphics, even if it's a 940m, it just needs to be marginally better than integrated

Currently I use a desktop for most things and what I'm looking for is something that can handle the same tasks as my desktop, but also function similarly to my surface pro

Well, a quick look at what's on Amazon and such, all the 2-in-1's with a discrete GPU have a GTX 940MX at best.

But even then, adding a Razer Core to these isn't going to be worth while in my opinion. They all have dual-core processors that are about the same in performance as a desktop Pentium. And are you going to lug the thing around at school?

I would propose since you already have a Surface Pro to continue using that and get a gaming laptop.

Right now, I'm leaning towards the HP spectre x360 2017 refresh.  15.6inch convertible with an i7 dual core, 16gb of ram, and a 940m, but has USB C.  Considering it costs significantly less than a surface book, I can get a razer core to use my 1080.  I just want to be able to do a little gaming, I know it will be tough with a dual core but I think I'll go that route.  Thoughts?

Performs near 1060 levels. Even with a solid quad core, a 1080 with TB3 overhead performs like a 1070.

Do not expect too much.

Why not get the Lenovo 720. 2 in 1. Quad core. 1050. TB3.
