So I have an nForce 680i SLI motherboard with 6GB of RAM and an Intel Xeon X5460, as well as 2 GTX 550TI's in SLI (It's part of an Alienware restoration project).

I've already changed the FSB to 1500 (from 1333) and it's been installing updates all morning, and the highest it's gotten temp-wise is 65C. That's pretty good for this CPU, not to mention that it's on the stock Intel heatsink.

How high can I push the FSB before breaking something? I was gonna put it at 1600 to get it to 3.8GHz-ish, and I plan on installing a Silverstone AIO 120mm at some point.

just push it untill it breaks and then start backing it off untill it works again

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Spoiler

you wont physcally break any component in your PC unless you go crazy with the voltage, you will just notice that the system is unstabile/wont boot and then you either reset the CMOS or go into the BIOS and turn it down a bit. its not like anything is going to catch fire because you tried to overclock it too high one time

I don't usually play with voltages, so I guess that's reassuring. I'll pump it up to 1600 and see what happens. Brb

Just don't try to push voltages over 1.5ish voltage, like how that mistake happened by JayzTwoCents with his FX-8320 or the CPU can die,BTW,aren't Xeons meant to overclock?

No, they aren't. They are meant for server applications. They support ECC FB-DIMM memory.

Here it is at 1600MHz FSB. I will need a new cooler if I intend to keep this config. It's installing updates right now.

I am getting a 240mm AiO for my main PC (which also uses a Xeon, hehe) so my CM d92 will go into this thing.

Then how can you overclock that so hard, means 3.8 GHz,oh wait,it is a quad core,I see how,I was comparing it to how Linus couldn't overclock that E5-2699 v3,my bad.

Yes, the X5460 is a quad core. 3.8GHz from 3.16 is still stupidly overclocked though. I can push it past 4GHz on a better cooler.

WoW,2007 quad core 3.8 GHz,impressive, maybe could go upto 4.0 GHz or later but I don't want to be greedy and kill your CPU,and it is enough lol.

Wait, you're using a Intel Stock Cooler!!!

3.8 GHz gg man

I wonder how that Intel Stock cooler would be like literaly being a nice new leafblower

Impressive, eh? Those temps are great for a 120W CPU that's OC'd.

120W+3.8GHz OC+Intel Stock Cooler+Under 70degrees (is it under load?),that's like a World Record to me lol since that is crazy,I have heard people compain about these stock coolers,I wonder how much someone would be able to overclock it upto with Liquid Nitrogen,9 GHz? and beat the worlds biggest overclock, just dont try it without liquid nitrogen with SpeedStep Off,then... New Automated Nuclear Bomb. That seems a Golden X5460 (even though that is not a CPU to OC with, impressive) xD

It was at a 25% load (Windows Update) when I took the pic. Still.

The X5460 is known for stupid crazy OCs. When I get my 240mm AiO I'm putting my current cooler on it to see if I can keep it at 3.8 under 70C.
