Check compatibility with motherboard and CPU you are planning to buy.

Don't go phenom X4/X6 because most phenom AM3 had 125w TDP, X6 is 140w TDP.

The safest route is Athlon II X4 or X3 (620-640) because TDP max is 95w

Most prebuilt dell AM2+ don't support 125w TDP

EDIT: Don't buy Athlon II X4 at all

Your motherboard only support AM2 processor, which only maxed at Athlon X2 6000+

Yes

But be careful since there are 3 variant, and one that runs at 3.1Ghz with 125w TDP

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K8/AMD-Athlon 64 X2 6000%2B - ADA6000IAA6CZ (ADA6000CZBOX).html

Windsor 89w

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K8/AMD-Athlon 64 X2 6000%2B - ADV6000IAA5DO (ADV6000DOBOX).html

Brisbane also 89 TDP

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K8/AMD-Athlon 64 X2 6000%2B - ADX6000IAA6CZ (ADX6000CZBOX).html

Windsor 125w TDP

The easiest way to identify is looking at serial number, if it starts with ADA or ADV you get 89w version.

  • 4 weeks later...

i was recently wondering if the athlon i bought could OC in this salvaged motherboard from the optiplex im working on and i know i will proably only have stock voltage to work with becuse it came from a medium for factor optiplex that had a vary weak PSU, and if it will OC if paired with a decent heatsync and thermal paste, how far will it go? 3.2 GHz, 3.5 GHz, 4 GHz? im fine if it outputs a ton of heat evan at its stock 3.1 GHz clock speed becuase i could use it as a heat source in the fall and winter and a maybe a micro grill in the summer becuase the heatsync i have for it now is a supper basic pure aluminum heat sync with fins that if used to grill would imitate the burn lines exept the lines would all go one way and you could cook anything much bigger than shrimp on it, maybe i could use it to boil small amounts of water if i needed to. and 1 more thing, when i run something like a pencile or my finger nail over the fins it sounds like a xylophone with all of the bars being the exact same length width and thickness :P
