I'm looking for software to control another computer that will be in my house for simple purposes, just so I don't have to walk halfway, do what is needed, then walk back to my room.

Background Info: I host many servers/games when playing with friends, such as Arma missions. I ordered a fairly cheap refurbished PC that will go in my living room to act as the hosting computer, however I would love software to take control of it so i don't have to constantly get up, power it on, launch what is needed and so forth.

Preferably looking for free software, but am willing to look into paid alternatives.

Windows remote desktop. While it's only officially supported on the Pro version (if we're talking Windows 10), you can enable it in the home version too.

I've been using that method for the past couple of months to access my desktop from my laptop and it works well.

EDIT: As for powering it on, you could purchase a remote controlled switch and wire it up to the power pins of the motherboard.

Would those be able to power it on though?

Well, there's no software solution that can power on a PC. It would require some physical changes in order to allow the power pins on the motherboard to be bridged remotely. If the computer is on, but in a low power state, that's different as it's waking the PC no turning it on. RDP and Wake on LAN should accomplish that.

Yes. This.
If you make an account you can acces your computer from anywhere.

When I'm at school I start 3D render jobs on my PC at home via teamviewer.

If you are trying to actually stream games I wouldn't recommend teamviewer (lag/crushes bitdepth)

not heard about magic packets? Aka wake on lan. Though I believe this only works while the computer is asleep.

Basically what I said in the post you quoted....

my bad, had a sleepless night. You could wire up a raspberry pie and some robot button pusher system.
