I built a new pc containing:

CPU: I5 4670k (not overclocked).

CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i

Motherboard: Asus z87 Pro

Ram: Corsair Vengeance 8g 1600mhz

Graphics Card: Asus GTX 760

PSU Corsair ATX 860

SSD: 160G Samsung 840

HHD: 1 TB Seagate Barracuda

HHD: Some old 500g hard rive from my old dell laptop

Drive: Blue Ray from Asus

I built this in late August and it worked for a few weeks and then random power failures. I assumed it was the power supply because the software that came with my Asus motherboard stated it had shut down the computer due to an unstable power supply. So I RMA'd the PSU, got a new one, rebuilt my pc, hit the power button and nothing. No fan spinning, no beep from the motherboard, no post, nothing. Just a green light on my graphics card, stating it was receiving power, and the on board power button was lit.

I then proceeded to bench test my system. I tested it with just the CPU, CPU Cooler, tried using one dim, tried with no HHD or SSD, tried with just a BR drive and no HHD or SSD connected, tried the paper clip test to insure the PSU was not the problem and the fan spun, still nothing. So I figured my old Corsair PSU killed my mobo and bought a Gigabyte Ga Z87 HD3. Installed that into my system and when I tried to turn on my system my fans spun up for about a second or two and then turned off. I pulled everything out again and benched my system and the exact same thing happened, fans spun up for about a second and then died.

So my question is what should I do next. Could it be a ram problem, a CPU problem, or something else entirely.

I would have thought if it was some kind of RAM/CPU error there would be an error message or a blue screen or something.  The first thing I would do is make sure that H100i isn't leaking.  And that the CPU isn't dead or fried.  Then if your Motherboard supports it, I would use Asus BIOS flashback to update your BIOS to the latest version.  If the problem is the h100i send it back, get a refund and buy a high quality air cooler, the perform better in certain scenarios and a cheaper compared to Closed loop water coolers.  And something like a Noctua cooler has really high end components and the fan has like a 6 year warranty....  The last thing I would do is try see if its your RAM, by maybe trying one stick at a time or even buying a cheap stick of 4GB and try that.  Also make sure the power cord is nice and safe and also well secured into the power point and the Power supply.  Hope this helped.

Well I can only share what I know from experience...

1.  Make sure there are no shorts.  You are bench testing, so most likely you are OK there.

2.  For me, I had a similar issue.  Bought a new CPU and placed in my older mobo.  It would start up, fans would spin, then shut down after a few seconds.  It kept repeating that process.  Turns out my BIOS was outdated and needed to be flashed to a newer version.  So MAYBE try to flash the BIOS and make sure it's the latest version.  But again, since you have both a new CPU and MOBO, I wouldn't expect this to be your issue.

3.  Your RAM is installed in the correct DIMM(s)?

4.  Last thought- try clearing the CMOS.

Let us know if you get anywhere.

Thanks for the reply,

My Asus motherboard does support bios flash back and I did try that. The bios was updated, as indicated by flashing green lights stated by the motherboard manual, but still no change. I never though to check the h100i for leakage. However i just did and i did not notice anything out of the ordinary. I have already tried the each individual stick, out of two, and tried them in different slots, but still nothing. I am thinking about buying new ram though. Have you ever encountered anything where fans lights and all power up for about a second and then turn off, any ideas? I have tried the paper clip test and the fan on my PSU spun up, so I don't think that is the problem.

FTW_Perverse the Mobo is new however the CPU is the same. I did update the bios on my asus motherboard and cleared the cmos. And by clearing the cmos you mean removing the circular battery on the mobo for about 15 seconds and putting it back in, correct? The ram was installed in the correct dims, the mobo manual stated it should be the first and third dimm,

Did you try with both DIMMs populated?

And what happens with NO sticks installed?

So which MOBO are you using now?

With the Gigabyte MOBO, make sure the DIMMs are populated correctly.  Didn't sound like you had it right.

Screenshot

Should be populated in the 2nd & 4th DIMM (from left to right)

And i did not reset the cmos on my asus motherboard i removed the battery and waited for about 15 seconds and then put it back in. But nothing changed.

Did you remove the jumper too?

No i just removed the battery. Also for the gigabyte mobo, i did have the sticks in the wrong dimms. Just tried it with both sticks in the correct dimms it did not start  but the fans and led lights stayed on for about 3-4 seconds. I also tried putting only one stick in at a time but the system still did not boot and the fans and led lights only powered on for about a second.
