Consumer grade parental controls

I have a bit of a weird problem. I want to be able to block YouTube for my kids when I am not home. I want to be able to block youtube during certian hours and have it unblocked during others. I have a Linksys router with Lynksis smart wifi firmware. How would I go about doing this seemingly, at least as far as my research goes, impossible task

You can use opendns to do so. Set your router's DHCP DNS servers to OpenDNS' then go to their website and configure the blocked websites. It's not consumer grade, but it works really well.

Tried but open dns is network wide and works all the time :(

If your kids are sensible enough to not search inappropriate videos when you are out I think you should allow access at all times.

Well if you want to do it for just your kids' devices, you can set the dns settings locally. Just make sure they aren't smart enough to know to change their dns settings.

I'm sure they a have a brain cell to tell them that searching inappropriate content is probably not the greatest thing to do.

that the issue one of them is super techy and would totally do that when he realises I am using open dns

Now, I'd still be considered a kid by some so let me give you some alternate advice. No matter what you do, they will find a way to go around it. The best thing you could do would be to give them a strong lecture.

a couple of phones, a family windows machine, a rasberry pi, 2 rokus, 2 gaming desktops, and 2 windows laptops. I need to be able to block at a network level because otherwise they will find a way around it.

Is there a good way to put pfsense on the router? The  router model is the  LINKSYS EA6900 AC1900 SMART WI-FI DUAL-BAND ROUTER

Your best bet is to somehow implement opendns. The only real non-clientside solution would be to implement routing and firewall rules. You would need to set dhcp ip mappings to each device's mac, then use firewall to prevent all other IP addresses from accessing the internet. You can then specifically apply port/IP blocking to each device through firewall rules. That alone would not allow you to block youtube. You would need to block all dns access except for opendns on their devices through firewall rules. That would prevent them from using any DNS service other than openDNS.

 

But then you would still not cover the barely blockable VPN connection. You could block default VPN ports, but with some tweaking, an openVPN server can make its traffic look exactly like a normal https site, using tcp port 443 over SSL.

 

As a side note:

I know it's not my job to tell you how to raise your kids. I will tell you though that I have seen lots of kids that were really interested in technology and had great futures going for them, but were never able to practice learning by themselves and expanding their knowledge because they had restrictive parents that were worried about the 'naughty stuff' that the internet has. I would personally recommend that if your techy son/daugher is over 11 or so, dont bother blocking anything. I know it can be hard to think of them learning bad things, but the more you make it seem like a 'forbidden fruit,' the more they will be tempted to access the content you dont want them to watch.

 

And no, you would not be able to install pfsense on your router. PFSense only officially supports x86 cpus. There is an ARM kernel based version that they use an their smaller premade boxes. Even though your router does have an ARM CPU, the kernel would need some big tweaking in order to support it.

Yeah once they realizes it they can change the DNS on their PC and it does nothing

Small weigh in as a dad with 2 kids on the internet:

 

I am not blocking anything, just the normal filter stuff standard on youtube and such.

My deal with them is simple, everything gets logged (every browser has a history) and i get to check it weekly.

If anything weird / wrong pops up they lose their computer/phone for a week. No discussions and no excuses, this also applies if their history "vanishes" xD

 

This sounds intrusive, but they both accept it and act accordingly. This gives them freedom to do what they want but be held accountable. So far it worked and i hope it will for a while :)

I did something similar to this on a TP-Link N600 at the partners parents house (She has two younger borthers), Worked a treat as had DHCP with subnetting, only one group allowed net so changing IP manually didn't work, the only issue is if they manually changed to my IP than yet they get access but if the parents suspected anyone I could just pull up the logs and than question them why my certain open IP's has been surfing Youtube all morning than change them,

 

if the parents don't get the answer they wanted kids don't get any computers for the weekend.

did you just look at the chrome history? or also used myactivity? that last one is pretty new and i doubt they will know that one too

Just did some checking, but my kids are both a user with restrictions. They cannot run incognito mode or delete their history.

I also disabled the ability of chrome to run in guest mode.

 

I know its an uphill battle as they learn more. But atm with this mode and windows 10 being restricted i have a handle on it atm xD god knows for how long tho.
