Ripping Blu-Rays

Go to solution Solved by Zodiark1593,

For purposes of backup (seriously, piracy is damaging to legitimate users as well), MakeMKV is the best tool. Alternatively, with older Blu Ray discs, you can directly use Handbrake with the libbluray libraries and key database to rip and encode directly.

You're doing this for backup purposes, right?  Not for piracy reasons hopefully.

I use MakeMKV (link to official site) to rip the Blu-rays.  It's free while in Beta, you only need to look up the new key (link to their forum, to the relevant post) every 2 months.

Once MakeMKV is done, usually I use MKVtoolnix (link to downloads page on official site, Windows is near the bottom) to sort out the title and sometimes rename the subtitles and audio tracks (usually when there is directors' commentary etc) so that they can easily be recognized in the player's menu.

Some people run the .mkv files through Handbrake (link to official site) to reduce the size, but I personally don't do that because I have plenty of storage space and don't want to compromise on quality.

All the tools listed above are free (at least for now), work perfectly fine and not hard to use.  Just try them, all you can lose is some time.

Of course I am only going to use it for backup. Thank you for your response.
