All of the sudden getting a fraction of my previous fps

I ar Caboose
Go to solution Solved by Shiv78,

How are you hitting almost 100C on a stock 6500??!!

I'd check the cooler and make sure it isn't loose or broken

I have an rx480 and an i5 6500 and would play games like cs go, battlefield1, and gta v  at 75+ fps high ish settings. I turn on my pc today and cs go is running at sub 25 fps, and battlefield1 and gta v are literally unplayable. I have no idea what happened. I updated my gpu drivers and restarted my pc multiple times, but nothing changed. Really need some help.

Check your temps as you play, you could be thermal throttling.

i don't think its that as it didnt start off at a good fps then gradually got worse. I just turned it on today and it as like that. (and it was at room temp because it wasnt on)

yeah balanced or hp is usually fine. nerdslayer1 is probably right, it sounds like there is crap running in the background. Is task manager showing high CPU usage at idle?

I think these are pretty normal. CPU usage seems to move from 9-15%

that's not normal, repaste your thermal paste and open a window, what cooler do you have?

Just the stock cooler that came with it and the pre applied thermal paste. The research i did before building it led me to believe that if i wasnt overclocking or anything I should be fine but.. idk. maybe not?

get a cheap cooler such as a T4 or 212, you will get much better temps.

Welp, it seems the problem is solved. looks like two of the peg things holding the cooler had come loose, probably due to my pc being at my feet and me bumping into it now and then (yes im working on relocating it) ive had it on for a little bit now and it seems to be at much more normal temps. havent loaded up any games yet, but i think i should be good. Thanks guys <3
