Hey guys,

I was going to purchase some new equipment for a new type of internet connection in Australia named NBN or FTTN (Fibre to the Node). I was looking at these products (Theoretical speed is 100Mbps down and 40 Mbps up):

TP-LINK TL-SG1024D

TP-LINK TL-ER6020

I also have an old TP-LINK wireless AC modem/router that I want to reconfigure as a wireless access point. Any suggestions to what I should change?

I am ditching the Router when i get NBN and going PFsence and just using Wireless access points for wireless and my AD server for DHCP and DNS

no point for routers as they go out of date so fast now where pfsence has more things to it.

only issue is you need a pc with a min of 2 nics

I believe NBN is the name for the new network which can consist of FTTP (Fibre) and FTTN (VDSL2).

If it's FTTN then do you require the modem as well? Personally I have a Vigor130 VDSL2 router to a Netgear Switch with an AP (which I want to swap out for a Unifi AP).

If you want an all-in-one then maybe the Asus RT-AC58U ?

No, the modem is built into the home NBN system. All you have to do is to plug in a router. Have any opinion TP-LINK and their products?

Setting up your equipment

To prepare for your service over the new nbn™ network being switched on in your area, simply set up your VDSL2 compatible modem using the instructions given by your service provider. This modem should have been supplied by your service provider or, if you already have a modem, it must be VDSL2 compatible for it to work over the nbn™ network.

Have they stopped distributing FTTP? It seems like the majority of people getting connected to the NBN nowadays only have the option of doing FTTN.

From what I understand it slowed in favor of FTTN as its cheaper and faster to deploy - I think theyre still deploying FTTP in areas though.

In New Zealand we're the opposite - VDSL2 (FTTN) was quickly rolled out into areas which will take a lot of time to get FTTP - but eventually Fiber will replace VDSL as we reach completion. My area in NZ received FTTN about 2 years ago, and is being upgraded to FTTP in the next 18 months which will replace the VDSL.

NBN has unfortunately been handled pretty poorly compared to our roll out (UFB) which there was a lot of controversy about why NBN was being so opposed and held up by Abbott - given that he has a relationship with Murdoch (NewsCorp / Fox / Foxtel) and they didnt want to lose their market share to the likes of Netflix. Thats a fair enough concern considering UFB (up to 1Gbit Fibre & Cable services) over here in NZ are wrecking havoc on SKY TV and theyre feeling it hard since they never put anything in place to really compete with the big streaming platforms.

Officially they stopped rolling out FTTH except for new developments which still have to be FTTH if they're over a certain number of properties. In reality some of the FTTH deployment took a while to wind down so it kept being rolled out for a while after they swapped over. Also in some areas the copper is so garbage that they've been forced to deploy FTTH. And then there's HFC which is another discussion entirely.

Basically it used to be pretty simple. If you lived in or near a town/city above a certain population you got FTTH. If you were on the very edge of that population centre you'd get LTE. If you were even further out than that you'd be on satellites. These days what you get depends on when you were first scheduled, how old your house is, what services were there before, how dodgy the copper is if you have it, the phase of the moon, your mother's maiden name and whether or not you've sacrificed a goat to the gods or not.

and based on how things are going it doesn't appear to be cheaper or faster. It changed entirely because of politics.

Fools think they know everything, experts know they know nothing
