1080 or 1440??

EV1L BURR1TO

I just got a gtx 1070, i know using this gpu for 1080 is sort of overkill but 1440 monitors are expensive. Do i have to use a 1440 monitor for the gpu i have?

No you dont HAVE to use one.

If you cant afford a $200 1440p display then I dont think you should go to a crappy panel $200 144hz 1080p either, so just save up. (unless you're interested in refurbish)

i own a 144hz 1440p monitor. some games i play in 1080p for better performance.   So id personally say, no you don't need a high resolution monitor unless you really need / want it. i purchased my 1440p only because at the time i couldn't get a good 1080p with high refresh rate and input lag. so i just went and got the benq i own because its what the store had at the time.

i have a 120hz acer monitor i used not long ago with my gtx 1080 and i found no issues running at 1080p honestly preferred it for the higher FPS in some games with higher demands.

You don't HAVE to, but the 1070 is a fast card (on par and faster than the Maxwell Titan X).  You would benefit from a high refresh rate 1080p monitor at least.
