Hey guys,

in some weeks i am gonna have my 2nd part of the A-levels finished and as a reward i am gonna get myself some kind of PC graphics upgrade. My current plan was to just watercool my current evga gtx 970 sc (has misaligned heatpipes---> only two copper ones are touching out of the 3 heatpipes-->really hot and loud with 84°C on 50% fan speed) with a NZXT G10. Since the card itself sometimes crashes and i dont know what exactly causes it, might be VRM overheating, which would be fixed by using an AIO and putting some heatsinks on there which would make the card really silent, otherwise I would consider buying a new card. If not then i would get a used gtx 970 to run SLI or might be able to sell my current card to classmate who would buy it off me for like 125€ (not too much, but still okay) so i could get a new decent card. A new card that i would buy would probably end up being a gtx 1070 since I wanna get an upgrade but don’t want to bust all my money on a gtx 1080. Down the road i would like to SLI the 1070 maybe since i have a 1440p monitor and i really want to be able run games maxed out with maximum Anti Ailaising at some point in the future. The con with getting a new card would be that its gonna be much louder than a watercooled gtx 970, which is still a good performer, so i really have trouble deciding what to do here exactly. I really want to have a quiet graphics card, because my cpu cooler is also very quiet and i could potentially have a "just slightly audible under gaming"-system.

I hope you know what I am talking about, since this information might be a bit overwhelming and I am a bit tired already as well  ;)

thanks in advance,

Tiwaz

First, 'grats on passing your A levels.

I agree it sounds like your card is overheating. Tbh, Im not sure a watercooler is going to do much good.

Honestly, the decision is yours. It sounds to me like you really DON"T want to replace your GTX 970. If that is the case, I'd save your money and wait for Volta to make it's debut.  As a side note, I wouldn't sell it to a friend UNLESS that friend knew about the problems and was comfortable handling them.

thanks man, on written exams i got a C and two B's which is pretty awesome, hope the second part is going to be at least decent ;)

My friend has custom pc watercooling and a gtx 970, so he knows what is a good deal and what not and he knows about the problems i have, thats why i would sell it for like 120€, he would SLI them and apparently he doesnt care about noise too much. The cheapest gtx 970 used you can find here online would be 160€, so i think 120€ is okay. Also watercooling the card would make it silent pretty much. I saw videos where people installed 120mm AIOs on cards like the r9 290x and it was with medium fans speed at a temperature of around 65°C, which is really good for a 250W TDP card, the gtx 970 only needs like 160Watts.

is it really that silent, because my brother has a asus gtx 1080 strix and even with a custom fan curve at 75°C you can hear the card as well, its not silent and not quiet, but its also not loud.

Would it be worth it to SLI the gtx 1070 down the road? Obviously at that point i might need a new CPU cuz even at 4,7Ghz a 4690k isnt going to be good enough for two cards of that cailber

Mention me if you want to summon me sooner or later

My head on 2019 :

Note 10, S10, Samsung becomes Apple, Zen 2, 3700X, Renegade X lol
