Hey guys,

I have a NAS from D-Link running (DNS-320 Sharecenter Pulse) and the fan on it is not particularly quiet. However, the fan can be replaced quite easily. It is a 40mm fan, 10mm thick frame. So far so good...but it runs on 5V, so I would assume the NAS does not supply more than that.

There are a bunch of 5V fans out there, so getting one is not that much of a problem. However the fan in this NAS also says it uses 0.25A, whereas most fans I have looked at use less power, some others use more. Is it important to match this value, or will a fan that requires less than 0.25A simply use less?

Could I just use a 12V fan that simply won't run at full speed because of the reduced voltage?

The PCB has a standard 3-pin fan header.

There is a picture of the fan attached to the post.

So amps do not matter? That would be good news since this would at least open up options.

I could only find one 40mm fan from Noctua, it doesn't say anything about minimum Voltage on their website. I know some fans won't start under 8V-9V.

Okay I have ordered the Noctua fan, some guy on Amazon said need to change the pin-out on the connector but that is supposed to be no problem. I will share my experience here once the fan has arrived. Already excited to see the excellent packaging from Noctua on such a small fan, they could probably even make a metal screw look premium with their packaging :D
