I've developed an app as well as some arduino code to control some addressable RGB LEDs similar to the NZXT Hue. You can check the full project here:

Either way, I have the back-end under control, but the user interface is IMO quite horrible and non-intuitive. So I call upon anyone who would like to help expand this open sources project. You don't need to know how to code C# or use VS. All you need to do is come up with sketches or even full blown designs for the app. Here is what it looks like now:

The idea is to come up with a prettier and hopefully more intuitive UI. Anything from ideas all the way to full VS projects are more than welcomed. Thanks in advance!

Dany out!

For some reason, most people like this look now.  Like you, I think it's boring, but you should go with what most people will like.  I say leave it as is.

That being said, if you wanted to make it a little fancier, you could make the background dark and add a white overlay to it.  I was too lazy to work around the fonts and everything, so just pretend there aren't still a bunch of white spaces.  I just wanted you to see what I mean.

Like said, doesn't look that bad. Just make sure it scales properly and maybe allow user to change window size too. Even if it means they have empty space. Those two things are important for me personally. And if I need to select just one, it would be the scaling thing.

Personally I like basic design in things. As long as it works, it doesn't need to look fancy.
