Random Shutdowns

Go to solution Solved by slightlyjaded,

I would have guessed temp issues as well especially with a cpu intensive game like skylines.

Something to consider that I don't have enough info on. Ryzen has had issues with ram running under xmp profiles (This is the bit I don't know enough about). Skylines would be putting the cpu under heavy load. Is it possible that the cpu is becoming unstable as the load increases until it just gives up?

Thermal shutdown is pretty easy to diagnose in most cases. Your computer just gets slower as it thermal throttles until it goes into emergency shutdown. Once you've seen it a couple of times you recognise it when you see it again.

Hey everyone,

I am having a strange issue. I am getting random shutdowns with my ryzen 7 build. The problem occurs when I play Cities Skylines for an extended amount of time; say... 45 minutes? The game runs perfectly fine with Zero slow down during gameplay until the event happens out of the blue.

All my USB devices are still lit and the fans are all still running, but  nothing is on any of my screens, and there are no sounds. The power button on the case also seems to not work properly, but that seems unrelated. I usually just flip the switch on the back of the psu.

my system specs are

ryzen 7 1700 OC @ 3.9GHz

Dark rock TF heat sink

rx 480 8GB

16 GB Kingston ram at 2400MHz

MSI Tomahawk B350 Mobo

CX-750 PSU

128m.2 nvme boot drive

1TB SSHD game drive

The shut down seems kinda like a thermal shutdown but not quite. I tried to see if I could find videos of thermal shutdowns on youtube, to try to compare to, but that was harder than I thought it would be.

I measure the CPU temp with NZXT cam software but I also used a laser thermometer aimed as low on the heatsink as I could.

CAM measured as high as 72C which I wouldn't think is that bad. The laser thermometer measured 68C. There are no critical errors in event viewer after this event happens. I am also able to immediately resart the computer right after this happens.

This is the 2nd time this has happened. nothing really has changed, except that I'm gaming on a widescreen now  (as of 2 days ago) and I flashed the bios about 3 weeks ago to the latest 1.5 BIOS from MSI.

What's going wrong here?

this I have not considered. I DO have to activate XMP to run the ram at 2400MHz. I could potentially try to run the ram at 2133MHz to see if it changes at all. I have also been able to overclock this ram to 2667 without issues. I'm not running at 2667 because of weird post issues. perhaps running at 2133 may be what I need to do. I'll try that next time I play the game.

So I tried to play last night with ram at 2133MHz. I was able to run the game for 2 hours, then I left it running on pause (usually where the error would be most exaggerated) and went to the store. An hour later I came back to find the computer still running cites at a normal temperature.

it appears Cites isn't happy with the current version of my bios and my ram setting combined. So hopefully that new AGESA update will remedy this issue.

Thanks again for your suggestion! :D
