Hi, I'm new to the forums so i will just start off by saying hello, so "Hello". Now let's get to it

Recently i bought a new motherboard and cpu, that being

i7 4770k

MSI Z87 MPOWER SP

I didn't really have any problem installing it, but when i had installed it all and tried to boot up, the fans would start spinning, but it would immediatly turn off again. I've been thinking it's because of my PSU, but it still doesn't make any sense in my head why a new cpu and a motherboard should knock out my PSU when the build i'm running currently seems to use more power. At the moment i've a pretty old AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition and i thought it was time for a new cpu. I did a little bit of research and it seems like the AMD processor i'm currently running uses more power than the i7 4770k, but i'm not 100% sure. My GPU is a soon to be replaced XFX radeon hd 7800 series, and as far as i know it doesn't draw that much power.

I've been thinking that there is a high chance it's the power supply simply by just seeing how it starts and turns off quickly after (like it doesn't get enough power to boot). Another note about it being something about the PSU is that there's a JPWR 3 (Power transfer to the cpu) and my PSU doesn't have a cable to that, but even MSI says that it's not needed to have something in it since it's just to stabilize if there is an overclocked cpu.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Best regards Memmo

Quickly check all the wires comming from the PSU, now you may have an optional 8/4 pin around the top of the motherboard near the CPU socket. if they are in take them out and try booting, or the other way around.

I'm not sure what you mean, do you mean i shouldn't have anything in, but the 24 pin (JPWR 1) and just leave JPWR 2&3 empty?

no keep the 24 pin in, but the others around the top can sometimes only be used when you are running like tripple/quad SLI and they wont boot with them plugged in. (my old Rampage Extreme III did this)

Hmm, seems interesting. I will try it at some point, thanks.

Sounds like it may be a cpu overheating problem. Generally caused by a poorly or incorrectly mounted cooler; or a cooler not being plugged into the right (cpu) fan header on the motherboard.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
