GPU doesn't fit all the way into PCI slot

I'm building a pc for my fiancé. I've run into an issue where the 980ti will not fit into the slot all the way. 

 

The screw holes for the GPU line up perfectly with the case before the gold fingers are in the slot so no amount of force will get the gpu in. 

 

Anyone dealt with this before? I've never had this issue.

Have you taken the PCIe slot covers off?

Theyre on. It's an nzxt case so they're preinstalled

do other cards fit? or are all cards having this trouble? 

 

Could be that the case is faulty. I had asked if the 980 would be a low profile card, but a quick search lead to no low profile 980 to be found on my part so that is too out of question.

I once had an old Compaq server that jumped out of its rails while shoving it back into the rack. Due to its mass and weight it wedged really tight.

 

So I grabbed a 5 kg hammer and hammered it back into it's rails, so it could move smoothly again. 

 

I left the server room, holding the hammer right to my breast smiling. What I didn't know was when opening the door I nearly hit my boss in the face with the door. He stood still, looked at the hammer and my smile and said "please tell me you didn't fix a server with that!" ... I said "Indeed I fixed a server with that..." and went on my way.
