But when I go to get our Christmas photo from this year is says the drive e is corrupted and when I plug it in I hear a clicking noise? but I can still see all my folders and files it just won`t let me open them. Anyway to recover this problem WITHOUT Formatting the drive ? Many Thanks!

Hey there

Install CrystalDiskInfo and show us what that program says about your drive. It will be able to identify a dying drive.

I suspect your drive's about to die. The best thing you can do is not use it at all, until you have a new 2TB drive as a replacement and once you have it, clone the old drive into the new drive. That's your best bet at recovering the data. Linus did a couple videos on the matter.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

Most likely the drive is failed and you need some professional to get your data back.

If the data is really important i suggest you don't use it anymore and take it to the professional to prevent anymore damage.

Clicking drives means something hardware already failed inside.

A clicking noise from the drive itself is a sign that it's about to die. Use a tool like CrystalDiskInfo (http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html) to check the SMART data and see if any of the values in this table (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.#ATA_S.M.A.R.T._attributes) marked Critical are indeed, in the bad zones.

All drives can fail in the same manner. However, I heard Hitachi makes a better drives.

You should get a backup drives, or use a NAS with RAID configuration.
