How do I deal with the godforsaken task of homework? I cant deal with the repetitiveness of memorising poem quotes, trying to know how to use colons, semicolons, and hyphens my English teacher doesn't make it any better saying some of my best work is only a level 5(C+), I just can't deal with her shit, the schools shit or this new godforsaken new GCSEs with their stupid fucking numbers and making me feel like shit for not knowing anything. I wish it was like maths computer science and all 3 sciences when there is only one right answer no "you need a flare to your writing that is developed for years". Fuck I hate it so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What you appreciate about math and science is that the solutions are mechanical and easy to verify, and while that doesn't hold all that well in advanced topics, it's invariably true in comparison to language.

 

Problem is, in order to consistently grade language-based work, they've come up with some very specific systems that condense everything down to an arbitrary and disjointed set of parts, while the rest is still subjective bullshit. There's no way to properly evaluate language-based academic work the same way you can with math and science, and until people realize that, we have to deal with their pitiful and misguided attempts.

Basically, it's stupid people trying to make a completely subjective thing fit on a scale and only succeeding to make the subject utterly worthless.

Higher level math, particularly abstract mathematics, is mostly English, though with a set format and purpose. I can attest to this being a math major.

 

Both English and Math rely on a structure to keep things working so that we end up with something that makes sense. There is an underlying set of rules to each that if one does not understand makes the subjects significantly harder. 

 

That being said it is incredibly demotivating to not understand something. And I would agree that most memorization in this day in age of smart phones is pointless, though you should still know the general rules. What helped me get through English was reading books to develop a sense of what is right and wrong in how things are constructed plus there's some good books out there. That and proof reading my work some, even going over it once is a huge help. 

 

As for actually motivating your self to do homework. I would find something that motivates you. I base my video game budget off of how well I do with school and I'm in college. I know people who ate a tootsie roll after every problem, they quickly gained an addiction but got there homework done. Just find what motivates you, develop a plan, and stick to it.

I was never good at English but I do miss it, also we were never explicitly taught grammar at school :S 

Its no for everyone, but take what you can out of it. Sometimes it's nice to think so differently, that being said, when you're in the thick of trying to do it, it's less fun :P

Try and split your sentences up more, your second sentence is way too long. Could've definitely done with a full stop after 'hyphens' and potentially after the 'C+'.

You do need that GCSE grade C though, you won't be able to go to uni or get a non-menial job without it. If you write like a twat and use bad grammar, everyone in the office will think you're an eejit.

You shouldn't really be complaining about the repetitiveness of homework if your only pulling c's.  If you were getting a's on assignments then you can complain that the homework is repetitive.  As it is now it looks like you should put a little more effort into your homework.

I can sympathize though.  I hated English in school.  Math and science all the way.

Your thinking about it too closed minded. Everyone starts the same at birth. English teachers weren't born literate. They learned it like everyone else, so you can too. Just sit down practice and be motivated

I can sympathize though.  I hated English in school.  Math and science all the way.

 

I'm trying to get my A's but a lot of the stuff we have to do in English is really annoying me. I can't figure out how I am supposed to get better grades.(I have tuition but I just can't get any better)

You do need that GCSE grade C though, you won't be able to go to uni or get a non-menial job without it. If you write like a twat and use bad grammar, everyone in the office will think you're an eejit. 

 

Yeah sorry about my grammar and sentence in the first post. I was on my phone typing that, I generally have better grammar.
