I currently have a i5 4690k.

i recently upgraded to the 1080ti and the x34 monitor

my question is. Would I see a frames per second increase if I switch to the i7 4790k

or wait and upgrade to a 7700k or a next gen after the 1151 chipset.

how much increase would I see in performance by upgrading to that 4790k or waiting for next gen and upgrading motherboard and ram

Thank you

You'd notice in games like GTA V that are high cpu games, but playing at 4k it won't be near as big a difference as at 1080p or 2k since the load is much more focused on the gpu

This would be the better way to go in the long run, in my opinion. At the very least, get the GTX 1080 Ti and monitor first (assuming your mind is made up about those) and check what your performance is like with the i5. If you're happy with what you see, wait it out for a bit.

As said above, this depends on the game. Not every game taxes your CPU to the same extent, and therefore not every game will hit a CPU wall at the same point.

Overwatch seems to care a surprising amount about i7's once you get to extremely high framerates. In general you aren't likely to see a drastic improvement going from an i5-4690K to an i7-4790K from most games, though.

Battlefield 1 really loads up an i5 to about 90%+ on all cores at around 80 FPS in my experience, so if you play that you may see an unusual big difference from an i7.

But basically if you're happy with what you've seen so far with the i5, there's no rush.
