Windows 10 Desktop freezing.

RileyTheFox

Hello.

I'm having an issue on Windows 10 where all the icons on the desktop, the taskbar and even selecting programs already on the screen becomes unresponsive when viewing the desktop. The only way I can then select a program is using Alt+Tab. Even the Windows button doesn't work in the left corner!

The only time the windows button and taskbar icons become responsive is when something other than the desktop is showing and selected. As I'm writing this in Google Chrome, everything is responsive. As soon as I click out everything is unresponsive again. The mouse moves perfectly so the system isn't hanging permanently or anything. If I have Task Manager and Google Chrome in small windows next to each other. Clicking the desktop makes them both unresponsive, as usual. But if I select Task Manager through Alt+Tab, I still can't click Google Chrome, just because the desktop is viewing.

This issue fixes when restarting explorer but only for a few minutes. I've tried restarting my machine and logging out but the problem occurs again, making it difficult to use desktop shortcuts and use windows that aren't maximised.

I've been having this issue on and off for a few months. I thought I had somehow fixed the problem because it went away for at least 3 months and now it has come back to bite me again.

Help is appreciated, thanks!

sounds like Windows 10 syndrome (the tendency for Windows 10 to just be unstable af)

I would recommend running "sfc/ scannow" as an admin in the command line.

Alternatively you could just not mess with it and reinstall.

'Windows 10 syndrome' - That made me chuckle :D (I'll start calling it that now :P)

Would the update Creators Update fix the issue? I don't want to potentially screw something up using a DOS command :P

it could possibly fix the issue, however knowing MS is will just make things work.

and that command is there for the average user to be able to run without risk of damaging anything. All it does is scan the OS to see if there are any missing, damaged, or corrupt files that it can replace.

Ok, I'll try it. I'm thinking of downgrading myself to Windows 8.1 as it seems a whole lot better than this hunk of junk. Would it be better or nah?

There are a lot of people who still run Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 because they are both more stable and give you more power over your machine than Windows 10.

If you want to I would say go for it. Your alternatives are MacOS and Linux.

Ahh yes....I have no idea since I have not messed with Ryzen. I recommend checking out what some youtubers have to say about it.

I've seen lots of crashes on Ryzen platforms with old operating systems. Back to the original question, would NVIDIA Share be potentially causing the issue?

well it says you have a 960. When those cards were around the R9 380 was a better GPU.

Today they offer better high end cards but Nvidia has weaker low-mid tier cards compared to the RX series.

I hope the nVidia share being off works for you. I've been having the exact same issue for a week now and it's driving me nuts.

If this fixes it when I get home, i owe you a case of (root, if under 21) beer.

EDIT: Just googled nVidia share, since I don't have GeForce experience installed, I'm guessing this won't fix my issue. :( I hope yours is fixed, but I can get my issue to "go away" for a bit too. See where this thread goes.

As soon as I turned NVIDIA Share off it worked fully to up to when I turned my PC off for the night. When I next go on my PC I will try to remember to see if it the problem is gone now that NVIDIA Share is off!

So are you having the same issue as me? Desktop freezing up? Try checking for any 3rd party programs that run in full screen but invisible (like NVIDIA Share), if you disable these programs and your desktop then works, it's NVIDIA's fault.

Regularly when I start my PC and I am in the desktop, my whole screen will go black or white because NVIDIA Share's window stops responding, I only get to see my desktop when the program closes or begins responding again.

I hope you are able to fix your problem too!
