nope just get a 4790k and a 1080, gtx 1070 or a 1080ti.

Why would I get an old architecture when I could get a Ryzen or 6000/7000 series CPU? Ivy Bridge is LGA 1155, devils canyon is 1150. I'd have to replace the PC anyways.

for a cheaper alternative, build your system using ryzen 1600 or 1700.

i would just upgrade your gpu first and then upgrade your cpu and motherboard later. chances are your cpu will be fine paired with a gtx 1070 or 1080. yeah you may see some bottle-necking in some games but i would expect it to only be minor.

To give you some perspective, my 2500k heavily bottlenecks a GTX970 in CSGO. And that's at 3440x1440. So 1080p will be MUCH worse, plus with a 1080 even more so.

not really a comparison, which is better a 6core 12 thread 5820k( 1600 is vary similar to a 5820k/ 6800k) or a 4 core 4 thread i5 7600k.

Well, intel does better in single core. But in multicore AMD, plus amd ryzen 1600 has more cores and threads. the 1600 is a little cheaper...

I don't do productivity, but I plan on using this system for the next 5 years (Must make it through university), so for gaming and light multitasking (Watching netflix while playing Fallout 4 and the like) which would perform better? In pure gaming applications I see the 7600k winning majority of the time, but I'm not sure how that will translate intro real world...

tbh i would just go with the r5 1600 because it is cheaper and comes with a good cpu cooler. also it is good to have the extra core just in case you end up doing something that would require those extra cores.

Well, the respective cpus are within a few fps of eachother. Keep in mind Ryzen is still technically new so devs are still working most likely to close the gap. So it is a very close call.

This chip is 5 years old at this point.

I advise you to get a complete new system.

If we're talking about CPU bottlenecking in games, then everything but 7700k will bottleneck to some degree..

The hell are you talking about. The 3570k should be fine in like 90 percent of games and the other 10 percent i doubt a 7700k will be able to handle.Sure there are a couple of titles like GTA and Metro and Tomb Raider but even in those titles you should be fine at a decent 60fps

....still a bottleneck, it will depend on what OP thinks is "fine". since OP has the money why not upgrade to something better.

We are talking about 1080p.

My 2600k is also bottlenecking my 1080 on 1080p which is why i know exactly what i'm talking about.

I mean ofc you can run it and you'll even see better performance as with a 1070 but there's still a huge bottleneck.

Pretty sure it's cheaper to get a 1080 then a 1800x or something then to get a 1600 and a 1060 and then upgrade

yeah he should upgrade the gpu first then upgrade the cpu later. upgrading the gpu is actually going to improve performance while the cpu upgrade wont do anything until you upgrade the gpu.
