GPU Power

I've been watching a lot of videos about some of the high-end graphics cards I can't afford and I've started wondering - How long will it be before PSU manufacturers and GPU Manufacturers to decide they need a new power connector capable of supplying more power?

 

This question comes from the fact that the new GTX 1080Ti ASUS ROG Strix uses 2 8 pin Power connectors and they aren't exactly small connectors.

 

Am I trying to find a solution to something that isn't a problem or are we gonna need a better connector in the not too distant future?

Actually power draw of new gpus mostly goes down, except for ultra high end consumer cards. It would not be reasonable to create a new standard just for those cards. As @yathis said, it is easier to just add another 8 pin connector.

They dont. GPUs use less and less power over time. The most power-hungry card is the Powercolor R9 295X2 Devil13 with 4 8 pin power connectors. Since that beast still uses PCIe power connectors, no other cards will use different ones.

A 1080ti probably uses around the same power as a GTX 480 so there is no use in getting a new connector as they are not getting more power hungry at all.
