Xeon x5650 help.

1 minute ago, WhisperingKnickers said:

Yeah I have had that same experience, I really like it here. I'm not sure why there is so much hate, right now I'm building a dual x5690 build and I received some hate for it. But really why? For what I'm going to use it for 3.4Ghz with 12 cores and 24 threads is going to be perfect and I saved a lot of money doing it. I don't think I can overclock with the board I have but I don't really mind.

old xeons are great. i bought my asus P6T7 supercomputer back in 2008 with a 920 and only upgraded the cpu to a 6 core xeon wich i got from ebay for 100 euro or so and with some overclocking can still kick the ass of a lot of current i5 from today.

Yeah, the xeons are something unique (in my opinion) and still rock. It's going to be overkill for my uses (gaming/photoshop/school) but for 35$ I can't say no. I couldn't even get a g4560 for that much, let alone DDR4 ram and a mobo. And the xeon will still whoop its ass.

haha thanks. The guy said they were used in his server since new, and they should work. He originally wanted 60 for one or 100 for two but I managed to talk him down to 35 :D

That is a pretty great deal. You really can't beat that with any current competitors not even close. I got the two 5690's I have for $350 maybe $360 asw a pair so somewhere around 175 each

Not bad for something that sold for $1700 when it came out :D

You really did, you can get 5650's on ebay for $80 so if you manage to get it for 35 that would be super cool

Excuse me if this is gonna sound stupid but I'm thinking of buying an X5650 and want to clear a few things up.

First off, are they overclockable (via bclk) with an X58 board? From what I've seen online they are but just want to be sure.

Secondly, do they work with regular DDR3 ram or do I need server style? Again, from what I've seen online, they do but just want to be sure.

And thirdly, would an HX620 be enough to power one? (I assume it would work but, again, just want to be sure).

Thanks.

Im going to stop you right here and right now. if you already have a X58 no brainer go for it. If you dont then don't waste your time with this dying socket. buy a Ryzen 5 and have all the new features USB 3 sata 6gbs etcx

1) they ARE overclockable via BCLK, if your Motherboard supports BCLK overclocking. They do NOT have unlocked multipliers on the x56xx chips. The w3xxx chips DO have unlocked multipliers AND can be overclocked via BCLK, but these are not as power efficient nor have the same thermal headroom as the x5675 and below chips. 130W Gulftown Xeon (w3xxx, x5680-x5690) vs 95W Westmere Xeon (x5650-5675); all of these are LGA 1366 / X58 compatible.

2) Regular DDR3 will be fine. Depends on your motherboard whether ECC is supported, but it's not necessary.

3) no clue, I have an 850w power supply if that helps.

Source: X5675 running at 4.4GHz on a Gigabyte X58 consumer board (200bclk 22 multi), using DDR3 consumer memory. It would go faster but the temps and voltages made me nervous, so I settled on 4.4.

My chip is pretty on-par with my housemate's stock clocked i7-6700k, so for $65 shipped I'd say it was a great low-buck refreshening of the computer.

I will echo that unless you're trying to build a low-buck computer OR already have an X58 system, don't bother.

1 YES you can BLCK a FCLGA1366 Xeon. Mine is running at 172Mhz x25. I believe 26 is max on mine, the 5650 should be slightly lower max.

2 My Sabertooth X58 will work with Desktop DDR3 or Unbuffered/Unregistered ECC RAM, your choice.

3 Yes, My X5680 OC'd to 4.3Ghz is running on a Seasonic G550 at 1.33v with a GTX 960 and 24Gb RAM.

There are. Please don't make posts you have no experience with. Participating to learn is awesome, but misinforming others is just irresponsible.

@ImadKnight

X58 motherboards are insanely expensive, if you don't already have one this build will not be cheap. Make sure you price the board while making your decision.

My board is in my signature, and yeah it is an X58. I wouldn't consider an xeon otherwise. They even market the fact that it supports 6 core CPUs http://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-X58A-UD3R-rev-20#ov

And they have no warrenty. He's either being funny or a douche cause he delid his (under warrenty) i7 and then broke it. :P

My board is kinda of a unicorn in that it supports pretty much everything from 3 way SLI/crossfire to USB 3.0 to Sata 6GB.

My main server is a T5500 with dual hex xeons.  It beats the snot out of a lot of other systems.  I tried doing some gaming, with full settings, on it and it held up amazingly.  My biggest issue was the video card which I had to get a riser for, because it couldn't fit in the case.

However, if you're looking for a place that has older parts and systems for servers on the cheap, servermonkey.com is where I get most of my stuff.

I got my T5500 for <$500 with (including shipping):
2x X5670 XEON
32GB registered DDR3 12800

And they ship to the UK, too.
