Question regarding hard drive power.

What happens if you don't plug in the SATA power connector for a hard drive (either SSD or HDD)? Does it just not turn on or does it operate at a lower performance? I need to know the difference for a particular project I'm doing and testing both ways is harder than doing it one and done.

Wanted to know if the data cable transfers pure data or had some kind of ambient power transfer from the board.

Nope, SATA carries nothing but data.
