Why you need a xeon?

What vm's?

For a normal nas/plex server a pentium g4560 and a b250 board will work just fine.

I need the performance of the Xeon as this will be a replacement to my current Hyper-V server which has 3 Linux VM's and 1 Win7 VM running at all times. I am keeping my current server for now as i want to finish my Server 2012 accreditation. But when i eventually move out i don't want the super loud 1U server blaring in the background and will likely only have room for the one server.

How much cpu and ram do you need

What are the vms doing?

Vms don't need much cpu unless you doing something with them.

Not too sure on the CPU side of things but ram i am going to need around 32gb to start with but want the option to add more later. The windows 7 PC is my Torrent machine, Linux - 1 is Owncloud, Linux -2 is Homebridge and the third linux machine is used for a hacked together version of PIMYHOLE (That can be deleted :)).

What budget are you looking for?

What type of power is ok?

There are a few options That i see here. Prices are for board + cpu + ram

- Used dual lga 1366. About 300 dollars for dual 6 cores and 48-64gb of ram about 140w idle

- Used dual lga 2011 about 600 for dual 8 cores and 64gb of ram about 120w idle

- New xeon d system about 700 for quad core and 32gb of ram or about 100 for a 8 core. About 30-40w idle

-New xeon e3 system. About 550 for a quad core with 32gb (e3 1230 v6) with about 40w idle( you could get a i7 or i5 aswell, there the same chip)

Apologies for the delay in response, needing this to fit on a ATX size MB. So dual CPU is out of the question. My budget is around £500-£600 for all including Case, MB, CPU, RAM and PSU. The budget can be stretched abit within reason. Would like ECC as i am going to have high amounts of data stored on it.
