Help with OC'ing 7700k

I have been experimenting around OC'ing my 7700k for a while, with not a lot of success.

Currently, I have it running at simply 4.5GHz @ 1.19V - I like to keep my system kinda quiet, however would like to at least try to take it further.

In the past, I have tried taking it up to 4.8, I get it at around 1.3V, however I am aware that this is bad, considering most seem to be able to get 5GHz @ 1.3V.

Did I just get an unlucky chip? I though 4.5GHz @ 1.19V was pretty good...

One other problem is the temperatures, I have a Corsair H80i, and at idle my CPU runs at about 35C. Currently, at 4.5GHz @ 1.19V, it reaches about 70C after 15 minutes on full load, is this good?

I have a feeling I got a bad chip here, as when I go 5GHz @ 1.4V, I get a BSOD.

So basically, I was wondering if there was anything I could do to squeeze a little more performance out of my CPU, while keeping temperatures below 80C under load, even if I did end up with a bad chip?

MY SPECS:

Intel Core i7-7700k

Gigabyte GA-Z270 Ultra Gaming Motherboard

16GB (2x8GB) Corsair LPX RAM, OC'd to 3000MHz

Corsair H80i AIO Liquid Cooler

Delid.  $50 and you may be capable of 5Ghz at similar temps

I have considered this, but I really don't want to take the risk... this was the first PC I ever built, and, as a 15 year old, a 7700k is an expensive CPU, I can't afford to accidentally break it. As I have never done anything like that before, I don't feel confident. If I had an old CPU to practice on I might, but I don't, unfortunately.

I have a 4790k @ 4.7Ghz full load its pushing 80C, and its been running fine for the past 2 years so no need to worry about that end

It is possible that your chip isn't as good as others, but no need to fret as the gains from those few MHz are not really noticeable

rokkit will make it safe.  Your CPU is good but the TIM on the die is holding it back.  You can get a 280mm radiator if you want but it won't be as good as a delid

tbh its very very safe with a delid tool, if you used a vice i can understand but as long as you follow the instructions its easy. all you do is turn a screw and put some thermal paste on a die as well and the ihs.

I know I wouldn't really notice it, but it would just be something to do, I find just messing with PCs is fun, as I am sure many on this forum do too :D

Realistically, would I see performance games in gaming from this, I would happily have a go at overclocking, as it doesn't cost any extra as at the time I got this 7700k it was cheaper than a 7700, but spending money for no noticable performance boost - especially $50, I don't think I could justify. I find fiddling around with PCs fun, as mentioned above, so OC'ing at no extra cost I would happily do.

you could return the h80i, buy a delid tool and a stock cooler and get better temps :P

Normally yes, however I bought this H80i for £35, second hand from Gumtree. As I am only 15 I need to cheap out on all I can xD

Yeah.  A CPU does a certain number of instructions per clock.  To be simple it would be 4.5Ghz * 2 ipc = total of 9 instruction given.  5Ghz * 2 = 10

ok :P i would offer to delid it for you for just the cost of shipping but my tool broke :(

Unfortunately then, delidding doesn't seem like an option.

Adding to this fact, I can't find the Rokkit one in the UK, so it would cost A LOT to get it here.

So are there no other ways, realistically, I could get higher frequencies, if it is as it seems and I got a bad chip?

Ok, that would be nice, however the fact the Rokkit delid tool doesn't seem to have a UK version, might put that out of my reach anyway :(

Either way, thanks for the help. Both of you.

Calm down on that, your chip is fine.  It may even be pretty good.  70c is totally normal for a 7700k

It's not temperatures I'm worried about, I sorted that out before as my motherboard was feeding way more voltage than it needed, at first, I have dealt with temperatures I would just like to get a little more out of it, if possible.

Save for a Delid-Die-Mate 2 and some cryonaut grizzly metal TIM.  You will see the biggest change

Ok as a 7700K user who streams while playing games completely fine while recording and cpu usage peaks at 40% what is the point or benif of OCing

things can go faster without the cpu being at 100% a ferrari is fast at 60% throttle than a focus :P just cos you only use 60% throttle doesnt mean you need to hinder your own performance which intel kindly shafted you for when you bought and unlocked k chip :)
