Difference between windows 10 s and rt

That new surface laptop seems like a very expensive chrome book competitor... it's marketed at schools for $1000 that's like three of the new iPads Apple announced

Just get an xps 13 or spectre HD or whatever.  Same price and better perf

Nah I don't want a new laptop I was just looking. And lol on the page it says a full size USB and Mini DisplayPort compared to two USB c ports on the MacBook. That's two thunderbolt three ports and Microsoft thinks a Mini DisplayPort and a USB 3 port is better than it.

Windows 10 S can run ANY program from the Store. Whether be Win32 or UWP. It just needs to be from the Store. It can also be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro (free until Dec 31st, no detail on pricing). Windows RT can ONLY run ModernUI  apps from the Store, and is designed to run exclusively (important key word for later on, as Windows 10 for ARM is coming, with full x86 emulation with Win32 program support) on ARM based CPUs.

 

Windows RT can't join a domain, and in general limiting, and the apps can't run on the desktop. They are full screen apps (beside Office, and Windows built-in programs like Notepad).  Windows 10 S, the apps are like the ones you have on the desktop. They run on the desktop environment, full screen or not, up to you.

 

 

All in all, Windows 10 S solves HUGE problems and limitations of Windows RT, which 'caused its failure. At least here with Windows 10 S, you have a few environment where the OS can work fine.

No RT is Not the better option it is far more limiting than Win10S.

But in all seriousness, basically, Windows 10 S is a version of Windows that only runs Windows Store apps, just like Windows RT. But it runs on a native x86/x64 architecture, unlike Windows RT, which ran on ARM.

 

You can upgrade Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro, thankfully, and run non-Windows Store apps.

 

For Windows RT this is a hardware limitation, for Windows 10 S it's a silly software limitation.
