CPU for Video Rendering

I am helping a friend build a pc for video editing, and one thing I am unsure about is the optimal number of cores for rendering.  I heard eight cores might be best, but I would like more than one opinion.  I have a graphics card in mind, so don't worry about that ;)

Yes more cores are better but this doesn't apply in AMD FX CPUs.

Ryzen 7 probably the best choice for video editing IMO

You want more cores for video rendering but usually the gpu is what is going to reduce the render time by alot.

Would you say eight cores is ideal price/performance, or should I not be concerned with it at all?

Ideal you would want as many cores as possible but until recently anything above a 6 core is just way too overpriced. Now that ryzen has come out the two cpus that are really good for these types of tasks are the r7 1700 and the r5 1600. If you can afford the 1700 it is definitely worth it for your use case but if you can't afford it the 1600 is still a great option.

I'd have to get back to you on that.  I am looking more for general information on what areas to focus on for spending money.
