For an open source photo editor, I have always used GIMP.

It's far from being as good as Photoshop, but it does it's job pretty well.

For video editing I have used Blender in the past.

While it's not technically a video editor, it actually more than capable at it.

But be prepared to learn all your keyboard commands over again, becuase Blender doesn't really comply with standards.

don't say sorry for having no money, if people are a dick about you not having money than they are exactly that, a dick.

GIMP is a pretty good photo editor, blender is a well known video editor.

Gimp looks pretty good actually :)

my uses for thies programs are to create YouTube videos

so gimp looks good for making the video image that people will click on

will blender be good for editing videos and adding simple affects ?

I have used Blender for semi-professional video projects in the past, so it should be fine for editing YouTube videos and adding a couple of effects.

What are your rendering settings?

Blender is one of those programs where every setting is pretty much wrong by default, so setting everything to your preference is mandatory.

Also, is Blender set to use the CPU for rendering?

If I remember correctly it uses the GPU for rendering now.

Well, to check your rendering settings you need to go into your scene properties.

To check your rendering device you need to go into Files → User Preferences. Then you can check there.

Not free, but ive been watching this company tat's producing a Photoshop competitor, specifically going after Adobe's subscription model by offering their software as a one time $50 fee. I haven't used the software but it looks great from what i have seen. It's called Affinity Designer
