So I'm heading off to college soon and refuse to quit gaming while I'm there.  I would bring my desktop but it's about the size of a small car because it is 3 towers plus the screens.  So I'm giving my desktop to my dad and buying a laptop replacement.

Budget:$1200-$2300 USD (flexible)

CPU: 7820HK, 7600k or 7700k

GPU: GTX 1070

Ram: 16Gb (I'm glaring at you ASUS...)

Screen. 17" at any resolution or refresh rate

Storage: 240GB SSD and a 1TB HDD

I have a few ideas already but I'm always open to new stuff.

Sager: looks like the 9173 is my top choice so far.

Sager 9173 pretty much fine with it stock

Sager 8177 this one can upgrade to a 7820hk

Alienware: it's cheaper than the sager for those who will immediately say "it's overpriced!"

Alienware17r4 that is one sexy laptop

I looked at other brands and didnt find anything so if anyone knows of something that could be a good option that would be helpful!

7600K and 7700K? You may want to look for some Clevo based laptops like Sager with desktop CPU inside it (thermal may be a problem)

You cannot get P775DM3 (NP9173) from Sager. It's broken at stock. It's way too hot. You need to get it from retailers like HID. Delids and applies liquid metal for your stuff to keep temps lol. http://www.hidevolution.com/evoc-clevo-p775dm3-g-custom-built-gaming-desktop-replacement-laptop.html

Laptops like the Alienware 17 R4, Asus G702VI, GT72VR, GT73VR, Predator 17 should all enter your consideration.

Personally, I'd get a AW 17R4 with the 4k UHD non-GSync , 7820HK, 1080. Try to find sick sales on it. Combine it with negoitating with their sales department, getting 10% off first time email newsletter, ebates you can get a SICK deal.

For raw performance the P775DM3 is the king. I know nothing about the Asus one cept it's alright and the 120hz IPS screen is pretty cool (but ghosting galore). Predator 17 is again alright if you find a sweet deal on it. GT72VR and GT73VR are too expensive for consideration.

$2300 USD is pretty fine for a laptop to do well. But let's clear some things up yeah?

First, as Pendragon said, do not ever buy the P775DM3 from anywhere other than HIDevolution or OBSIDIAN-PC. It'll be an overheating, poorly-cooled mess of a machine from literally anywhere else. OEMs don't care because they are fine if your CPU is sitting at 100c in unigine heaven on them as long as it doesn't shut off.

Second, the AW17 R4 is nowhere near being "cheaper". You're comparing an i7-7700HQ (3.4GHz 4-core turbo, not tunable) soldered CPU with a soldered, 100W 1070N card (as opposed to the 115W of other 1070N cards like in the P670HS) against the i7-7700K/1070N MXM machine in the P775DM3 (whose issues are fixed by HIDevolution and OBSIDIAN-PC). Also, you're getting a single 8GB stick of dogshit 2666MHz 19-19-19-43 system RAM too, as well as a paltry 128GB unnamed SSD (likely the cheapest trash TLC drive they could find) and a lower-end Killer network card for $2250 USD. On the other hand, its comparable model, the soldered P670HS, can be fully decked out for that price... I am able to get a 256GB WD Black M.2 SSD, 1TB HDD, AND a 500GB 850 EVO SATA 3 with 3 years warranty, an intel 8265ac, 16GB of 2400MHz RAM and W10 Pro with a recovery stick from LPC-Digital for $2253 (with the cash discount) on the same machine. Even HIDevolution, who is more expensive, I can get the same thing from, except a 250GB 850 EVO instead of WD Black, and have it be $2312. With a NBR discount it's under $2300 too.

Granted, the screen is better on the AW, but I feel it isn't worth considering the R4 unless it's the 1080 model and you will need to do a bit of heatsink bending I believe to make it work best. I would only consider LPC-Digital and HIDevolution for the P670HS. Both will get you Prema mods when they are out.

Granted, the P775DM3 is out of your budget with a 1070N, 16GB of RAM, a good SSD and 1TB HDD. It's sad that those are so pricey; I wish their price would drop. But nothing you can do about it unless you spend more for it or get a 1060N, neither of which I recommend. Instead, what I recommend to you is not to get the P775DM3 or the Alienware, or even the P670HS. The bet for you is the P650RS from LPC-Digital. Now you might be asking yourself "Why is he recommending a 15" model? I said I wanted 17"!"

Well see the reason is, the 15" model has a 120Hz Gsync panel available and is cheaper than the 17" model for the same specs (the screen negates this cost offset, so is basically free). The options to change would be:

- 120Hz panel

- 7820HK

- W10 Pro without recovery media

- 960 Pro 512GB OS drive

- 3 year warranty

This way this is about the best system at the limit of your budget; $2316.36. I want to tell you to take a 256GB 850 Pro for your OS and a 500GB SSD plus the 1TB HDD, but they do not offer this as an option. Alternately, you could take the 1TB HDD and 500GB M.2 850 EVO and ask them to not install the OS for you ($2190.26) and buy an 850 Pro 256GB on your own (+$138 totaling $2328.25) and install windows on your own. The 120Hz Gsync panel will simply do you FAR better in gaming, especially with that 1070N. I can't recommend 120Hz enough. So that's my suggestion to you.

If you really want to go 17", then the P670HS is your only real choice for your budget. It's sad that they won't allow people to officially put the 120Hz panels in them, but there's nothing we can do about that bit. If you're getting the Alienware, you should heavily consider calling and haggling the price down and getting some better RAM for it. Because holy crap, the stuff you linked me it with is terrible.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

  • 3 weeks later...

@D2ultima

@Pendragon

@ZM Fong

sorry for getting back to you guys so late but after I made this post we had a huge thunderstorm and lost power for a day (this was the THIRD freaking time I tried to post this). Also, I completely forgot about it as on the 30th I found the Alienware 17 at micro center for $2000 and bought it. I'm really happy with my decision actually, and here is why (not trying to say I told you so, just wanted to clear a few things up).

So my budget actually could go to about $2700 but I didn't want to have to buy something that expensive unless it was really worth it.  That's why the second sager has the note about the 7820HK, I wouldn't want anything less than a 7700/7600K or a 7820HK.  Screens on the other hand I got a 1080p non gsync because I wanted decent battery life when I'm not gaming and when I'm home I can plug into my actual gaming screens.

So for the actual laptop I got, just a few things on it I liked:

As stated before I got it for $2000 and it met all of my requirements.  7820HK, 1070, 250GB nvme m.2 + 1TB HDD

The CPU nicely overclocked to 4.5Ghz with no extra voltage! way better than my last computer lol

temps are pretty fantastic actually, 65C GPU and 85C CPU on my most demanding game!  I had the liquid metal to upgrade the TIM but I don't really feel a need to now

GPU overclocked to about 2.1Ghz before it starts doing that pascal thing where it downclocks the hotter it gets

I love the metal body and RGB everything (since it's a proven fact RGB increases performance)

Some of the other laptops didn't support this but this one has intel Optimus to switch between the i and d GPUs to save battery

Again I'm not trying to prove anybody wrong or start a fight but I didn't want to leave this thread with no conclusion.  I am happy I didn't get the sager 9173 as I was about to pull the trigger on it, I never saw anything about the overheating problems so it's a good thing I didn't get it.  Also, thanks to everybody for the input anyway as it helped put me at ease with the decision I made.
