I am living in the UK and next year I will be going to higher education but unfortunately the equipment provided does not work too well and is very slow at even simple tasks like writing S/A on word. Have you got any good laptops in mind that will be reliable for things like game production in spare time and normal everyday tasks. Have you got any ideas what would be good at a price less than £400?

For that money just get something with i3 or i5 inside + SSD.

Browse around Dell Outlet UK. Check out both home and work sections. 

 

Give Alienware a quick cruise, see if the last gen models have dropped that heavily in price. 

 

Otherwise check the latitude e5470 series. They have quad cores with iris pro in some of their configs. Would be solid for the price. 

 

Finally if you want Ultrabook ish e7470.
