HDMI port not working on new monitor

I bought a Benq VZ2350HM monitor yesterday. But the problem is that the HDMI port on that monitor is not working. I tried using a cable that has HDMI male ports on both the ends.

 

However, as can be seen in the attached picture, when the VGA port of the monitor is used via an HDMI to VGA converter at the Graphic card's side(The graphic card doesn't have a VGA port. So, I had to use the converter), the monitor posts.

So do I need to return the monitor because the HDMI port is not working?

 

P.S. The HDMI cable worked when I connected my laptop to a TV using the HDMI ports on both the devices.

Try a new cable

Maybe your port is defective.
