I am upgrading from i5 4690k to i7 4790k.  I would like to do some before and after testing (gaming only).  Any suggestions on how best to compare?  Games I mostly play:

 

- Paragon

- BF1

- 7 Days to Die

- Unreal Tournament

 

I was thinking of just playing a game for 30 minutes and run Fraps in the background.  I would try to keep the level the same for each run, and I would do at least two runs for each data point.  The problem is the FRAPS only counts average and minimum FPS - I would like more data.  What do program you suggest for more data collection?  I have MSI afterburner, but I don't know about it since there is no hotkey to start/stop data logging...

if you get a performance boost at all, i doubt it'll be more than 10%.

perhaps.  it is 500 mhz faster, plus hyperthreading.  The net cost to me will be about $100 CAD.  The question is not whether it's good value, but how best to test it.

You will get nice improvements in BF1 due to the fact it runs well on 8 threads. You will see very good improvement here and for multi tasking.

 

You might not see any improvements in other games you stated due to the fact they are not very CPU demanding.

I don't really care about those.  Besides, those have been tested by many reviewers already.  What I want to know is how much benefit I get for the games I play in 2017.

7 Days to Die is a voxel game, and does use a lot of CPU at times.  Unreal Tournament and Paragon are both built on UE4, so I'd expect results to be similar.  I am running on a high refresh panel so I try to shoot for high FPS, thus the i7 should help.  I just want good test data to prove it.

You will get same perfromance in all these games but BF1. Due to the fact other games are not CPU demanding... only BF1 is really cpu demanding ( that the i5 was struggling a bit, other games the i5 was doing the job perfectly, no bottleneck so the i7 will not improve fps )

 

So yeah, improvements in BF1, thats it.

Thanks, but I'm not looking for conclusions.  I'm looking for tips on how to collect the data.

 

Also, my i5 struggles on 7 Days to Die on horde night, especially when I am hosting the game server on the same machine.

7 days to die is not CPU demanding... might be something else ? Not sure how you can tell that the cpu is not good enough if you don't even know how to collect data ?

You can just run game benchmarks, per example GTA V benchmark, or rise of the tomb raider benchmark is really demanding for the CPU also...

 

And you compare your scores...

That is so unhelpful.  I've already stated that I only want data for the games I actually play.  I've already stated that I collected data with FRAPS but want more detail.  I know about those canned benchmarks, I don't care about those.  That data is already available.  I don't own GTA V, and won't be buying it.  Your opinions are not helpful.  I just want to know how to record data beyond the FRAPS basics.  Frame times, usages, clocks, etc.  I will plug those into excel for some data analysis.

what you will want to do is use shadowplay to record gameplay and use msi afterburner to record cpu,gpu,ram usage.

 

simply download msi afterburner, go into settings, monitoring and find what you want to monitor, click on it and then select "show in on screen display".

 

i went from a 4690k to a 4790k and did see improvement, not loads in gaming but everywhere else quite the bit, especially bench mark scores.

Get Afterburner from MSI.

 

Then you go in options, monitoring, and you set everything you want to see in the game graphic. You will have to tune RIVA tuner also for the graphics color and size etc... you can find how to use afterburner on youtube there are many tutorials.

 

You can have many many monitoring options :

 

GPU usage, cpu usage, temps, clock speed, FPS, frametime etc... everything

Yup only game improvement is very very cpu demanding games that support more than 4 threads, so BF1 and..... BF1
